how to transfer a domain registration from godaddy to microsoft

I have a domain registered at GoDaddy. They moved from their private email server to M365 Exchange and that wasn't bad. We got an M365 Premium plan at home and added me to that for the rest of M365 (GoDaddy charges WAY too much). This worked for a while.

Now, no matter how I try to log into office.com or any combination of links that include my address, it redirects me to the godaddy login page. Godaddy says it's my problem.

I want to move the hosting of the domain to Microsoft so that everything is all together and I have no redirects.

    Hi @Kevin,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

The redirect to GoDaddy’s login page occurs because your domain is still associated with GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 tenant. Microsoft routes sign-ins based on which tenant owns the domain, so access to office.com and the Admin Center remains locked to GoDaddy.

To fix this, the domain must be released (defederated) from GoDaddy’s tenant and then added to your own Microsoft 365 tenant. This requires GoDaddy’s involvement. You can:

    • Contact GoDaddy support and request that they release the domain from their Microsoft 365 tenant, or
    • As a last resort, cancel the Microsoft 365 plan managed by GoDaddy to free the domain.

Once GoDaddy has released the domain, you can add it to your Microsoft tenant (Add domain to Microsoft):

    1. Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Settings → Domains → Add domain
    2. Verify ownership using the TXT record provided
    3. Update DNS records (MX, CNAME, TXT) to Microsoft and remove GoDaddy-specific records

After the domain is released, you may also contact Microsoft Support to assist with the domain migration and verification process if needed.

Finally, clear browser cookies and saved logins for GoDaddy and Microsoft. Once the domain is fully managed by Microsoft, the redirect will stop, and normal access will be restored.

Please let me know the answers to the questions above or if there are any updates, and I’ll be happy to assist further.

    Hi!

I have the same issue described above: we want (and need!) to transfer our domain to our Azure/Microsoft tenant and move our Microsoft 365 products to Microsoft rather than through GoDaddy. However, the steps you described above are not possible, as when I try to use the link to add our domain to our Microsoft 365 tenant, I am just redirected back to GoDaddy.

Our issue right now is that we have everything in GoDaddy, our domain and M365 plans (email and everything), and we are simply not able to transfer this over to Microsoft. We need our domain connected to Azure to build our application, set up services, and verify it in Azure services, too, which is hard when it's hosted with GoDaddy.

Is it possible to get help from Microsoft to do this transfer?

To transfer your domain registration from GoDaddy to Microsoft, you will need to follow these general steps:

    1. Prepare for Transfer: Ensure that your domain is eligible for transfer. This typically means it should not be within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.
    2. Unlock the Domain: Log in to your GoDaddy account and unlock the domain you want to transfer. This is usually found in the domain settings.
    3. Obtain the Authorization Code: Request an authorization code (also known as EPP code) from GoDaddy. This code is necessary to initiate the transfer.
    4. Initiate the Transfer with Microsoft: Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and follow the prompts to add a domain. You will need to enter the domain name and the authorization code you obtained from GoDaddy.
    5. Verify Domain Ownership: You may need to verify that you own the domain by adding a TXT record to your DNS settings at GoDaddy. Microsoft will provide instructions on how to do this.
    6. Complete the Transfer: Once the domain is verified, Microsoft will process the transfer. This can take several days. You will receive notifications regarding the status of your transfer.
    7. Update DNS Settings: After the transfer is complete, make sure to update your DNS settings as needed to point to Microsoft services.

If you encounter any issues during the process, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for assistance.
