Why Does my Outlook Classic App keep disconnecting from the server on my personal email and not my work email.?

I keep having to shut down my Outlook Classic App in order to retrieve newer email as it quits connecting to the Microsoft Exchange Server. I have the same issue with my Dell Laptop as well. I have deleted my email from outlook multiple times on both devices and still have the same issue on my Dell PC and Laptop and deleted my OST file as well. The newer outlook works and has no issues but does not have the functionality I like in the Classic Outlook App.

Please advise.

Hi Kenneth Swartzkopf

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand how frustrating this is, when Outlook Classic works fine with your work account but keeps disconnecting only with your personal email.

Please kindly note that personal email accounts use a different connectivity logic compared to work emails, when your work email (Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online) is connecting successfully. Currently, Microsoft recommends that consumer users access personal email via New Outlook or Outlook on the web.

I recommend that you:

  • Continue using Classic Outlook for your work email
  • Use New Outlook or Outlook Web for your personal email

Alternatively, you can try the following additional troubleshooting steps to see if they resolve the issue:

Method 1: Adjust Outlook account settings

  1. Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings
  2. Select your personal account, then click Change > More Settings
  3. Under the Advanced tab:
    • Disable Download shared folders
    • Disable Cached Exchange Mode, then re‑enable it
  4. Restart Outlook

Method 2: Prefer IPv6 on your network

Some Outlook.com connections are more stable over IPv6.

  1. Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center
  2. Click Change adapter settings
  3. Right‑click your active network and select Properties
  4. Make sure Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is checked
  5. Click OK and restart the PC

If you are using a router that supports IPv6, ensure IPv6 is also enabled on the router.

Method 3: Clear stored Microsoft credentials

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Open Control Panel > Credential Manager
  3. Select Windows Credentials
  4. Remove any entries related to:
    • MicrosoftOffice
    • Outlook
    • MS.Exchange
    • ADAL
  5. Restart the computer
  6. Open Outlook and sign in again when prompted

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please feel free to let me know how it goes.
