the Domain which I own [Moderator's note: personal information removed].com) is already in another tenant and I need it released. please provide instructions on how to do it to [Moderator's note: personal information removed].com. I DONT have admin access to the [Moderator's note: personal information removed].com as it was setup long time ago by an ex employee that no longer works in the company. I am taking over it and I already have control of the DNS domain but cannot link it to my M365 users

    Hello @Hendrick Lorentz

    Welcome to Q&A forum!

In this case, since you already control the DNS for this domain but the domain is still associated with another Microsoft 365 tenant, you’ll need to request a domain release from Microsoft. This is a common scenario when the previous admin is no longer available.

    Steps to Release the Domain:

    1/ Verify Domain Ownership

Make sure you can add DNS records (TXT or MX) for lenovodemos.com. Microsoft will require this to confirm you own the domain.

2/ Open a Support Request with Microsoft

Please follow the detailed steps below.

    • Sign into the "Microsoft Admin Center"
    • After clicking on "Help & Support" button like this image, you can type "I need agent support via phone or email". After that, you can click on "Contact support"
    • Choose contact method: "Phone"
    • Fill all the information in this contact support details, please describe your situation carefully so they will have enough information to help you.
    • Finally, clicking on "Contact me"

After completing them, you will receive an email appointment for a meeting to review this issue professionally together.

    Explain that:

    • You own the domain and control DNS.
    • The domain is currently linked to another tenant.
    • The previous admin is no longer available.

    3/ Provide Proof of Ownership

    • Microsoft will ask you to add a TXT record to your DNS to verify ownership.
    • Once verified, Microsoft will remove the domain from the old tenant.
    • You can then add it to your current tenant.

Please let me know if I can do anything more for you!

    Hi Hendrick,

Don't worry! Since you already control the DNS, you can "force" your way back in. This is called an Internal Admin Takeover.

Here is the easiest way to do it:

Sign up: Go to Microsoft 365 and sign up for a trial using an email from your domain (like ****@[Moderator's note: personal information removed]**.com).

Verify: Microsoft will see the domain is taken and ask you to prove you own it. You just need to add a TXT record to your DNS (which you already have access to).

Take over: Once verified, Microsoft makes you the new boss (Global Admin) of that old account.

Clean up: Log in, delete the domain from that old setup, and now you can freely add it to your main M365 account.

If you get stuck, you can call Microsoft Support directly and tell them you need a "Manual Tenant Takeover."

    Good luck!
