External Email IMAP/POP Service (Comcast) Can't be added to Outlook

When I try to add a Comcast.net email to my outlook, I get as far as putting in my Comcast Password for the IMAP/POP server and the continue button is Shadowed. It doesn't let me continue and it can't add the email. However, my MAC Mail adds the Comcast email very well and shows up in my MacMail application. I have checked all setting in the Comcast email server and those are correct for allowing emails to export to Outlook or other email applications. So What Is The Fix ??? Should I delete all old Microsoft Office Applications and start over?

Dear Francis Linnehan,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Q&A.

I understand how frustrating it is when you have confirmed all your server settings are correct, yet the "Continue" button remains shadowed and unresponsive. It is particularly confusing when the account works perfectly on Mac Mail but refuses to connect in Outlook.

The reason for the discrepancy is that Mac Mail uses a modern authentication method (OAuth2) that allows you to use your regular password. Outlook’s manual setup often requires a specific App Password to bridge the security gap between Microsoft and Comcast.

Here is the plan to "un-shadow" that button and get your account connected:

1. Generate an App Password

  • Log into your email via the Xfinity/Comcast web portal.
  • Go to your Account Security settings.
  • Look for "Manage App Passwords" or "Generate App Password."
  • Select "Outlook Desktop" from the list and click Generate.
  • Copy the 16-character code that appears.

2. Un-Shadow the Button in Outlook

  • Go back to the Outlook "Add Account" screen.
  • Enter your Comcast email address and select Advanced Options > Let me set up my account manually.
  • Choose IMAP.
  • When it asks for the password, paste the 16-character App Password you just copied. Do not use your regular account password.

If the button is still gray, kindly ensure these specific fields are not blank:

  • Incoming Server: imap.comcast.net (Port 993, SSL/TLS)
  • Outgoing Server: smtp.comcast.net (Port 587, STARTTLS)
  • As soon as the App Password is recognized and these fields are filled, the Continue button should turn blue immediately.

I hope these steps help you get your Comcast email fully integrated into Outlook. If you continue to see prompts after checking these settings, please do not hesitate to let me know.

If you're having trouble adding your Comcast.net email to Outlook, and the continue button is grayed out after entering your password, there are a few things you can check:

    1. Account Settings: Ensure that your account settings (IMAP/POP server settings) are correctly configured. Comcast typically requires specific settings for IMAP and POP access, which you can verify on their support site.
    2. Authentication Method: Make sure that your Outlook is set to use the correct authentication method. If your ISP requires authentication before sending mail, you may need to enable the option to log on to the incoming server before sending mail. You can do this by going to your account settings in Outlook and checking the relevant options.
    3. Basic Authentication: If your Comcast account has Basic Authentication disabled, it might not work with Outlook. Ensure that Basic Authentication is enabled for your account, as Outlook may not support Modern Authentication for POP/IMAP accounts.
    4. Repair Outlook: Instead of deleting all Microsoft Office applications, you can try repairing your Outlook installation. This can resolve many issues related to account configurations.
    5. Firewall/Antivirus: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can block Outlook from connecting to your email server. Ensure that your security software is not interfering with Outlook's connection.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Comcast support for further assistance or checking the Outlook support documentation for more troubleshooting steps.
