I cannot do anything with my desktop personalization besides change the colors and whether I'd like light or dark mode. The moment I select another option, like picture or slideshow, it automatically reverts back to the colors option

    Welcome Chelle Greene,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft forum. I am sorry to hear about your issue with your Windows desktop personalization issue, where options like pictures or slideshows revert to colors or solid mode.

Besides the earlier recommendations, you may find these additional options helpful:

    Option 1: Basic troubleshoot steps

    • Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), find Windows Explorer under Processes, right-click it, and select Restart. This resolves temporary glitches without restarting your PC.
    • Disable sync: Go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup (or Sync your settings) and turn off all toggles, then try changing the background again. Reboot to test if the slideshow sticks

    Option 2: Fix system files

    • Open Command Prompt (admin) (press Win + R > type: cmd > hit Enter)
    • Run: sfc /scannow to repair system files and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Update Windows via Settings > Windows Update afterward

    Option 3: In place upgrade

    • Go to Windows 11 website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11
    • Under Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO)
    • Once done downloading the ISO, kindly right-click on ISO then click Mount> then Click Setup.exe
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control. If so, click on Yes.
    • In the Install Windows 11 dialog, click Next.
    • Setup will check your PC and show a license agreement. Click on Accept in the license terms dialog.
    • Wait for the setup program to check for the available free space.
    • On the Ready to install page, make sure Keep personal files and apps has been checked.
    • Then click Install and just follow the prompt.
    • Windows 11 will restart your device several times and lead you to the lock screen. Depending on the options you set, it will keep all your files, apps, and user accounts.

I really hope that the information I gave above was helpful to you. Please feel free to reply below and let me know if you have further concern on this matter.

If you are unable to personalize your desktop beyond changing colors and switching between light and dark mode, there could be a few reasons for this issue:

    1. System Settings: Ensure that your Windows settings are correctly configured. Go to Settings > Personalization > Themes and check if you can select a picture or slideshow. If it automatically reverts back, there may be restrictions in place.
    2. Policy Restrictions: If you are using a version of Windows that is managed by an organization (like Windows Pro or Enterprise), there may be Group Policy settings that restrict theme changes. For instance, enabling certain policies can prevent users from changing themes or color schemes.
    3. Updates or Bugs: Sometimes, system updates or bugs can cause unexpected behavior. Make sure your Windows is up to date, and consider checking for any known issues related to personalization settings in the Windows community or support forums.
    4. User Account Control: If you are not logged in as an administrator, certain personalization features may be restricted. Try logging in with an account that has administrative privileges.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you might want to consult Microsoft support for further assistance.
