My desk top has a black screen behind the the icons. It was a picture I selected but now opens behind a black screen. How can I get it to change back?

    Hi Wayne Peek,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how disruptive it can be when your desktop background suddenly turns black even though an image is selected.

If the issue still persists after completing the Q&A Assist's guidance, please proceed with the following checks, as the background may be affected by accessibility settings or a temporary system refresh issue rather than the selected image itself:

Step 1: Check High Contrast or Accessibility themes

High Contrast and some accessibility themes automatically override wallpapers and display a black background.

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
    2. Go to Accessibility
    3. Select Contrast themes (or High contrast)
    4. Make sure it is set to None
    5. Apply the change and return to the desktop

When enabled, these themes replace the background with black while leaving icons visible.

    Step 2: Restart Windows Explorer

This safely refreshes the desktop without restarting the computer.

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
    2. Find Windows Explorer in the list
    3. Right‑click it and choose Restart

The screen may briefly refresh, then reload the desktop background.

    Step 3: Check sign‑in preferences (Windows 11)

Some systems restore a black background after signing in.

    1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup
    2. Turn Off Remember my preferences
    3. Sign out and sign back in

This prevents Windows from re‑applying a corrupted preference.

Step 4: Update your graphics (display) driver

Outdated or corrupted drivers can prevent wallpapers from rendering.

    1. Right‑click Start and open Device Manager
    2. Expand Display adapters
    3. Right‑click your graphics card
    4. Select Update driver

This ensures the display driver is not causing the black background.

Please keep me posted on how it goes. I’m here if you need further assistance.

To revert your desktop background from a black screen back to your desired picture, you can follow these steps:

    1. Right-click on the Desktop: This will bring up a context menu.
    2. Select "Personalize": This option will take you to the personalization settings.
    3. Choose "Background": Here, you can select your preferred background picture.
    4. Select the Picture: Browse to find the picture you want to set as your background and select it.
    5. Apply Changes: Ensure that the changes are applied, and your desktop should now display your chosen picture instead of a black screen.

If the issue persists, it may be helpful to check your display drivers or system settings to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
