Hi @James Niven,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.I'd love to clarify your current situation a little bit here.

The account you used to make the purchase is your personal Microsoft account, which is meant for buying products, managing personal subscriptions, and accessing personal services.

When you purchase a Microsoft 365 business license, Microsoft creates a separate business (work or school) account for you. This business account is what gives you access to business‑grade tools such as Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, and your company email.

Your personal account is controlled by you, but the business account is created inside a business tenant and is managed with business‑level security and administration. Even if you used your personal account to make the purchase, all business services are tied to your business account. This means that cancelling or managing recurring billing must be done using the administrator credentials of your business tenant.

With that in mind, there are two possible scenarios:

Scenario 1: You still have access to the admin credentials for your business tenant

This is usually the @onmicrosoft.com account created automatically when you first purchased the license, but it could also be any other admin account you later created and assigned admin roles to.

In this case, you can cancel the license renewal by following this guide: Manage recurring billing in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

You can only change the recurring billing setting for an active subscription. If your subscription has already expired, you must reactivate it before you can turn recurring billing on or off. For more information, see Reactivate your subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

  1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    • If you’re using the Simplified view, select Billing.
    • If you’re using the Dashboard view, go to the Billing > Your products page.
  2. Select the subscription that you want to manage.
  3. On the subscription details page, select Edit recurring billing.
  4. In the Edit recurring billing pane, select On or Off, then select Save.

Scenario 2: You don't have access to your admin account:

In this situation, it would also break down into two separate scenarios

1/ Contact other IT admins

Please check to see if there are other IT admins in your company who can help you with the reset passwords and MFA for your account and share with them the steps outlined in the article Manage user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication. This will help them assist you in resetting your passwords, MFA settings and restoring access to your account.

2/ Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by phone

If you're the only admin, in this situation, the Microsoft Data Protection Team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts. You can try reaching out to our Global Customer Service phone to raise a request for resetting your authentication method here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues, we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

You: Authenticator.

A: What products do you use?

You: Office 365 for business.

Verification: Education or company account?

You: For companies

IVR: Are you an administrator?

You: Yes.

IVR: Are there any other administrators in your organization?

You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.

If you cannot reach a live agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription.

To set up a new tenant, please follow these steps:

Visit Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the prompts provided. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Follow the guided setup process to create a new account for a new tenant.

Once your tenant is created, you should be able to access the support portal and submit your ticket referencing your locked account without further issues.

In your ticket description, you'll need to clearly explain that you're trying to regain access to your previous Microsoft 365 tenant and need help from the Data Protection team. Here's a message you can use or adapt:

"Hello, I’m currently unable to access my previous Microsoft 365 tenant. I’m the global admin, but I’m locked out. I created this new tenant solely to request assistance. I kindly ask to be connected with the Data Protection team to verify my identity and help me recover access to the original tenant.

This is urgent, as I rely on Microsoft 365 for my work and have been unable to operate for several days. I’m available to provide any documentation or verification needed to support the recovery process."

Ticket Support: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your issue is resolved, as this will help you avoid any accidental billing. You may prefer the following resource for detailed instructions: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

I hope this helps you regain access to your account quickly. I'm glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

Thank you so much for the reply,

I was able to get into the account and turn off re-acurring charges. This will expire on October 2026

But my next question is, December 2025 I purchased Microsoft 365 Family and this will ecpire on December 2026. Will I see a "Billing Issue" in October??

    Thanks

To cancel auto-renew for your Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription, you typically need access to the Microsoft account associated with the subscription. However, since you mentioned that you do not have access to the email address the subscription was set up with, here are your options:

    1. Recover the Account: Try to recover the Microsoft account associated with the subscription. You can use the account recovery options provided by Microsoft to regain access.
    2. Contact Support: If account recovery is not possible, you can contact Microsoft Support for assistance. Explain your situation, and they may be able to help you cancel the subscription without needing access to the email.
    3. Cancel via Payment Method: As a last resort, you could consider contacting your bank or credit card issuer to stop future payments for the subscription. This will prevent auto-renewal but may not officially cancel the subscription with Microsoft.

It's important to note that if you do manage to regain access to the account, you can follow the steps to turn off recurring billing directly through the Microsoft 365 admin center.
