Word has stopped opening my documents in the format I created them. Meaning, when I open any previous Word document, the page layout is odd. Not letter. Not legal. Just a box with odd margins.

If the page is displaying on-screen with 0 margins top and bottom, but prints correctly, you have inadvertently hidden the header and footer of the page.

To fix this, hover your mouse over the top or bottom edge of the page until the cursor changes to show arrows pointing up and down, then double-click. Or choose File>Options>Display and check the option Show white space between pages in Print Layout view.

    Hi Son Roberts

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand how confusing it can be when documents suddenly stop opening in the layout you originally created.

On Word for macOS, this behavior may be related to view or document‑level settings, rather than the content itself being changed. Below are a few additional macOS‑specific checks to help narrow this down.

Check section‑level page settings: Word documents can contain multiple sections, each with its own page setup. Even a single section using a different paper size or margin definition may cause the page layout to appear incorrect.

    • Place your cursor in different parts of the document
    • Go to Layout > Size and Layout > Margins and confirm the settings are consistent across all sections

    Confirm text boundaries are disabled:

    • Go to Word > Preferences > View
    • Ensure Text boundaries is unchecked

Test with a newly created document: Create a new blank Word document and check whether it opens with a normal Letter‑sized layout. If new documents display correctly while older ones do not, the issue is likely document‑specific rather than application‑wide.

Convert older documents to a modern format if these files were created some time ago or originated from another system:

    • Use File > Save As > Save a copy in .docx format
    • Reopen the new file and verify the layout

If the behavior persists, please share your macOS version, Word version, and any additional details about when this started.

Please let me know how things go on your side as your update can also assist others in the community who may be facing the same issue.
