How do I close an account not created by me for which I am receiving emails from Microsoft?

Several days ago, I received a fraud alert from AMEX that someone was registering for an M365 Business Basic subscription under my name with a username I did not recognize. I worked with AMEX to deny the charges and to replace my card. I continue to be contacted by Microsoft about this account, which appears to have an active subscription. How do I close it, make sure there are no more charges, and end the comms from Microsoft?

Dear @Marc Sanders,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft 365 Q&A forum. I am truly sorry to hear that you are dealing with this stressful situation. It is alarming to see unauthorized accounts created in your name, and I commend you for taking immediate action with your bank to secure your finances.

Since this is a Business Basic subscription, it exists within a specialized "Tenant" that you do not have administrative access to, which is why you cannot simply log in and close it yourself.

Steps to resolve the issue:

If the account doesn’t belong to you and you don’t have the credentials to sign in, I want to be completely honest it will be very difficult to cancel it through Microsoft. Microsoft takes account security extremely seriously. If they accepted cancellations based only on what someone says, it would be too easy for other people to interfere with accounts that aren’t theirs.

You have two options:

  • Go through the legal process to prove ownership of the account.
  • Cancel the payment through the credit card issuer or bank. This is usually the easier option since it doesn’t require proving ownership of the Microsoft account.

To stop the communications and ensure the account is fully deactivated, you must engage with the Microsoft Data Protection Team. Because this involves potential identity theft and fraudulent account creation, standard billing support cannot always bypass the security protocols of an active business tenant.

  1. Contact the Global Customer Service Team You need to call Microsoft directly to report that an unauthorized tenant has been created using your personal information.
  2. Find the specific number for your region here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support Ask the agent to escalate your case to the "Data Protection Team." Explicitly state that this is a "Fraudulent Account Creation" and that you have already filed a dispute with your credit card provider.
  3. Provide the Details from the Emails When you speak with the team, have the emails you received from Microsoft ready. They will need the Tenant Name (often looks like companyname.onmicrosoft.com) or the Order ID mentioned in the communications to locate and "quarantine" the account.
  4. Do Not Click Links While it is tempting to click "Unsubscribe" or "Manage Account" in those emails, please avoid doing so. If the account was created maliciously, those links could lead to phishing sites. Only use the official phone numbers provided above.

As a member of the Microsoft 365 Community Support team, I am here to guide you to the correct security channels within Microsoft. Please understand that for your protection and privacy, I do not have access to Microsoft’s internal billing systems or the power to delete tenants directly. Access to such data is strictly restricted to the Data Protection and Fraud teams to prevent unauthorized account tampering.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or if the problem persists after trying these solutions. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

To close an account that you did not create and for which you are receiving emails from Microsoft, you can follow these steps:

    1. Contact Microsoft Support: Since you are not the account owner, it is crucial to reach out to Microsoft Support directly. Explain the situation regarding the fraudulent account and provide any necessary details they may require to assist you.
    2. Legal Process: If you are unable to resolve the issue through customer support, you may need to follow a legal process to claim ownership or to report the fraud. Microsoft takes account security seriously, and they may require proof of identity or ownership.
    3. Monitor Financial Statements: Since you have already worked with AMEX to deny charges, continue to monitor your financial statements for any further unauthorized charges. If necessary, you can also consider blocking future transactions from Microsoft through your bank or credit card issuer.
    4. End Communications: To stop receiving communications from Microsoft regarding this account, make sure to inform them explicitly during your communication with support that you wish to cease all communications related to this fraudulent account.

These steps should help you in addressing the issue with the fraudulent Microsoft 365 account.
