A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Dear @Ziyana Walidah,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!
I’m really sorry this happened to you, especially with a thesis file and an exam tomorrow. I know how stressful and heartbreaking it feels when an important document gets overwritten. I’ll walk you through every possible recovery option on a Mac so you can check quickly and know exactly what is still recoverable.
Unfortunately, when a Word file on macOS is replaced with a new file of the same name, the original version is usually overwritten permanently unless it was backed up or synced. But first, please try all steps that the Q&A Assists suggested for you to see if they can help.
If it cannot help, here is another method to try:
If the file was stored in OneDrive, you may check Version History. Even if you overwrote the file on your Mac, OneDrive keeps older versions in the cloud.
- Sign in your OneDrive on the web via office.com
- Find your document
- Right‑click > Version History
- Restore an older version
Please check the detailed steps in here: Restore a previous version of a file stored in OneDrive
Moreover, about Time Machine (only works if enabled previously), since you mentioned you have never used Time Machine, macOS won’t have snapshots.
Finally, in this case, I would like to be honest with you with important clarification:
If the document was:
- stored only locally on the Mac
- saved with the same file name, replacing the old version
- Word was closed normally afterward
- not synced to OneDrive, and no Time Machine
Then macOS replaces the file completely, and the older copy may not be recovered. I truly wish macOS handled overwrite differently but it does not keep previous versions by default.
To avoid this ever happening again, please set this up after your exam: Always save documents in OneDrive (highly recommended) because OneDrive gives you:
- Automatic version history
- AutoSave every few seconds
- Cloud backup
- Just enable AutoSave in Word and it will store file inside your OneDrive folder.
I hope this information can give you some insights and as a Microsoft Q&A moderator, my role is to guide discussions and connect users with helpful resources. While I don’t have the right to access to individual account or your environment in order to recover it, even Microsoft do not have service for data recovery. However, I still try my best to support you using the resources available. So, please take a look in the Q&A Assists methods and my suggestions as well.
Wish you health and success!
