    Dear @Ziyana Walidah,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

I’m really sorry this happened to you, especially with a thesis file and an exam tomorrow. I know how stressful and heartbreaking it feels when an important document gets overwritten. I’ll walk you through every possible recovery option on a Mac so you can check quickly and know exactly what is still recoverable.

Unfortunately, when a Word file on macOS is replaced with a new file of the same name, the original version is usually overwritten permanently unless it was backed up or synced. But first, please try all steps that the Q&A Assists suggested for you to see if they can help.

If it cannot help, here is another method to try:

If the file was stored in OneDrive, you may check Version History. Even if you overwrote the file on your Mac, OneDrive keeps older versions in the cloud.

    • Sign in your OneDrive on the web via office.com
    • Find your document
    • Right‑click > Version History
    • Restore an older version

Please check the detailed steps in here: Restore a previous version of a file stored in OneDrive

Moreover, about Time Machine (only works if enabled previously), since you mentioned you have never used Time Machine, macOS won’t have snapshots.

Finally, in this case, I would like to be honest with you with important clarification:

    If the document was:

    • stored only locally on the Mac
    • saved with the same file name, replacing the old version
    • Word was closed normally afterward
    • not synced to OneDrive, and no Time Machine

Then macOS replaces the file completely, and the older copy may not be recovered. I truly wish macOS handled overwrite differently but it does not keep previous versions by default.

To avoid this ever happening again, please set this up after your exam: Always save documents in OneDrive (highly recommended) because OneDrive gives you:

    • Automatic version history
    • AutoSave every few seconds
    • Cloud backup
    • Just enable AutoSave in Word and it will store file inside your OneDrive folder.

I hope this information can give you some insights and as a Microsoft Q&A moderator, my role is to guide discussions and connect users with helpful resources. While I don’t have the right to access to individual account or your environment in order to recover it, even Microsoft do not have service for data recovery. However, I still try my best to support you using the resources available. So, please take a look in the Q&A Assists methods and my suggestions as well.

    Wish you health and success!

To recover an overwritten or replaced Word document on a Mac, you can try the following methods:

    1. Check AutoRecover files: Word for Mac saves AutoRecover files automatically. To access these:
      • Open Word and go to File > Open Recent. Check if your document appears there.
      • If not, you can search for AutoRecover files by navigating to the following location in Finder:
        • ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery
    2. Search for temporary files: Sometimes, temporary files can be found in the following directory:
      • Open Finder and use Go > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Temporary Items. Look for any files that might be your document.
    3. Check the Recycle Bin: If you had previously deleted the file before overwriting, check the Trash to see if an older version is there.
    4. Use a file recovery tool: If the above methods do not work, you may consider using a third-party file recovery tool that can scan your Mac for deleted files.

Since you mentioned you haven't used Time Machine, these methods are your best options for recovering the overwritten document.
