Windows update history shows:

"2026-02 Security Update (KB5077181) (26200.7840)

Failed to install on ‎2/‎11/‎2026 - 0x8024200d"

Have restarted multiple times since then, but won't update.

What should I do?

In Windows 11 there is an option in settings for recovery.

Settings > System > Recovery> Fix problems using windows update, then select Reinstall now.

    Hi Teresa Colbert,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that a Windows 11 security update KB5077181 failed to install with error code 0x8024200d despite multiple restarts.

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps shared above. In addition, please try the following.

Before that, I’d like to quickly narrow this down:

    1. Are you enrolled in the Windows Insider Program or running a preview build?
    2. Are you using any third‑party antivirus or system optimization software on this device?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

1, Temporarily pause and resume Windows Update

    • Open Windows Update
    • Pause updates, restart the device, then resume updates and check again

2, Repair the Windows image using DISM

    • Open Command Prompt as administrator
    • Run: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart the device after it completes

3, Check the Windows Update service status

    • Open Services
    • Make sure Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service are set to Running and not disabled

    4, Disconnect non‑essential external devices

    • Unplug external drives, printers, or docking stations
    • Restart the device and retry the update

5, Perform an in‑place update using Windows Update

    • Open Windows Update
    • Select Check for updates and allow Windows to retry the installation automatically

    6, Review available disk health

    • Open Command Prompt as administrator
    • Run: chkdsk /scan
    • Restart if prompted

To troubleshoot the issue with the security update (KB5077181) failing to install with error code 0x8024200d, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check Update History: Verify if there are any other updates that have failed to install. This can provide insight into whether the problem is isolated to this update or if there are broader issues with Windows Update.
    2. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: Use the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter to automatically detect and fix problems with Windows Update. You can find this in Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
    3. Clear Windows Update Cache: Sometimes, clearing the Windows Update cache can resolve installation issues. You can do this by stopping the Windows Update service, deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, and then restarting the service.
    4. Install the Update Manually: You can manually download and install the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog by searching for the KB number (KB5077181).
    5. Check for Disk Space: Ensure that your system has enough disk space available for the update to install.
    6. Check for Corrupted System Files: Run the System File Checker (SFC) tool to check for and repair corrupted system files. You can do this by opening Command Prompt as an administrator and running the command sfc /scannow.
    7. Contact Microsoft Support: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

After performing these steps, monitor the update status to see if the issue is resolved.
