Hello: I have researched this question, and seen answers on a different version of word. I however have started experiencing this recently, and the version of WORD I have is not the version in a previous question. Has anyone else experienced this recently? What fixes have you tried?

    Hello Sunny D,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I realize that you've encountered a problem with Word. I truly understand your confusion. Let me assist you further.

    I suggest you try this:

    1. Update Word to a newer build
    • Open Word
    • Select File > Account
    • Select Update Options > Update Now
    • Let Office fully update, then restart Windows

Once Word is on Version 2509 or newer, the blank‑document behavior should stop entirely. If the issue remains, please try steps below.

    1. Start Word in safe mode

This confirms the issue is not caused by add‑ins.

    • Press Win + R
    • Type:
    winword /a

    • Press Enter
    1. Repair Office (safe, non‑destructive)

    This does not remove documents.

    • Open Control Panel
    • Select Programs > Programs and Features
    • Select Microsoft 365
    • Select Change > Quick Repair
    • Disable startup add‑ins (only if you use any)

Word automatically loads startup templates and add‑ins, which can amplify the incident.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,

So, I was able to make WORD randomly open go away, and now after a MS update, it's back to opening a blank doc at restart. Very Frustrating.

It seems that the issue of Word opening blank documents on its own can be related to several factors, including add-ins, startup settings, or even corrupted templates. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Disable Add-ins: Sometimes, third-party add-ins can cause unexpected behavior. You can disable them by going to File > Options > Add-ins, and then manage COM Add-ins to disable any that are not necessary.
    2. Check Startup Folder: Word may be opening documents from the Startup folder. You can check this folder and remove any unwanted files that may be causing the issue.
    3. Repair Office: If the problem persists, consider running a repair on your Office installation. You can do this through the Control Panel under Programs and Features, selecting Microsoft Office, and then choosing the Repair option.
    4. Reset Normal Template: The Normal.dotm template may be corrupted. You can rename it to reset it, and Word will create a new one the next time it starts.
    5. Check for Updates: Ensure that your version of Word is up to date, as updates often fix bugs and improve performance.

If none of these solutions work, it may help to check forums or Microsoft support for any recent issues specific to your version of Word.
