Hello,

I am a student and currently learning software development. I am using the Microsoft Learn platform to study different modules and learning paths.

I want to know if Microsoft Learn provides certificates for software development or software engineering. If yes, how can I get the certificate after completing the courses?

Also, which certification should I follow if I want to become a software developer?

Thank you.

Microsoft does not have pure developer certifications in languages or tools, its exams are role-based and cover the day to day aspects of a job role such as

    • Azure Developer AZ-204 is about developing apps using Azure service so knowledge of how to deploy and manage Azure services such as storage and web apps is included
    • Azure AI Engineer AI-102 is about creating AI enabled apps and agents using Microsoft Foundry SDKs so it includes the endpoints and methods for creating those apps
    • Azure DevOps Engineer is about implemented DevOps pipelines including managing the Azure resources to do this
    • Power Platform Developer PL-400 which is about extending apps in the Power Platform

Then there are the GitHub certifications which are about using Copilot or administering and securing your GitHub enterprise organisations.

Microsoft Learn is the primary place to build the skills needed for Microsoft Certifications, including software developer roles, but the formal, industry-recognized certificates come from passing Microsoft Certification exams, not just from completing Learn modules.

    1. How Microsoft Learn and certifications fit together
    • Microsoft Learn provides free, role-based training (modules and learning paths) aligned to industry roles such as developer, solutions architect, AI engineer, and others.
    • These resources are designed to prepare for Microsoft role-based certifications at three levels: Fundamentals, Associate, and Expert.
    • Completing modules and learning paths gives achievements and trophies in the Learn profile, but the official certification is earned by passing the corresponding exam.
    1. Getting a software developer–oriented Microsoft certification
    • Certification at Microsoft is based on industry roles, including developer.
    • To get started:
      1. Go to the role-based certifications overview and browse available certifications by role and level.
      2. Choose the developer role and the level that matches current experience:
        • Fundamentals – for those starting out.
        • Associate – typically for about two years of experience.
        • Expert – for deeper, multi‑year experience.
      3. For the chosen certification, review the listed skills, learning paths, and the associated exam.
      4. Use the linked Microsoft Learn learning paths and, if desired, instructor-led training to prepare.
      5. Register and sit the exam through the certification portal (exams are delivered by providers such as Pearson VUE or Certiport, depending on level and audience).
    • After passing the exam, a Microsoft Certification is granted and a digital badge is issued that can be shared with employers and on professional networks.
    1. How to get the certificate after passing
    • Once the exam is passed and the certification is awarded, it appears under the Credentials → Certifications area of the Microsoft Learn profile.
    • From there, the certification can be viewed and printed or saved as PDF, and the associated digital badge can be shared online.
    1. Recommended path for a student aspiring to be a software developer
    • As a student starting in software development:
      1. Use Microsoft Learn to follow developer-role learning paths, especially those focused on Azure if cloud development is of interest.
      2. Start with a Fundamentals-level certification aligned to the chosen technology area (for example, Azure or Dynamics 365, depending on interests).
      3. After gaining more hands-on experience, progress to an Associate-level developer certification.
    • Microsoft Learn allows choosing what to learn, how to learn (self-paced modules, labs, instructor-led classes), and when to learn, so the preparation can fit around studies.
    1. Student-specific options
    • As a student, discounted exam pricing may be available through academic programs and exam providers.
    • Institutions can also purchase exam vouchers for students, or students can use academic pricing directly with the exam provider.
