Unable to see Calendar for Online Archive

After applying a retention policy configured to move the entire mailbox content older than 2 years to the In‑Place Archive, all items were archived as expected.

As a result:

  • Older calendar appointments are no longer visible in the primary mailbox calendar (expected behavior).
  • However, the “Calendar” folder is not present under the In‑Place Archive, and the archived calendar appointments cannot be located there.

We tested this behavior using: New Outlook, Classic Outlook, two devices

The behavior is consistent.

We would like to understand:

  • Whether this is expected product behavior "There's an article that mentions , when the Calendar folder is moved to the archive, it doesn't appear under the In-Place Archive. "is moved to non-IPM"", and
  • If archived calendar items are stored differently or are not exposed in the In‑Place Archive folder structure, or
  • If additional configuration or investigation is required.

    Hi @Amedeo

First, I recommend reviewing the AI‑generated response on your post, as it provides helpful insights that closely align with my understanding of the issue.

In addition, I would like to add a brief clarification and some practical guidance based on my testing. The calendar items are successfully archived and not deleted. However, the Calendar folder is not displayed in the standard In‑Place Archive view in Outlook.

To clarify this further, archived calendar items continue to exist in the archive mailbox and remain available for compliance, audit, and eDiscovery purposes. The data is not lost, it is simply not shown in the default archive folder structure.

    I hope this helps.

Please feel free to correct me if I misunderstood your request. If you have any additional concerns, feel free to comment below. I would be more than happy to assist.

    This is expected behavior.

For archive mailboxes, only mail items are exposed in the folder tree in Outlook and Outlook on the web. Calendar, contacts, tasks, notes, and similar non‑mail folders that are moved to the archive by retention policies are not surfaced as visible folders in the In‑Place/Online Archive. They are stored in the archive mailbox but are not available to view or browse there.

    Relevant client behavior:

    • Outlook on the web: The archive appears as In‑Place Archive in the folder list and is used to store items for freeing up space, but only mail folders are visible.
    • Outlook for Mac: Explicitly supports only the mail module for Online Archive; if calendar items or other non‑mail folders are moved to the archive in another client, they cannot be viewed in the Online Archive from Outlook for Mac.

Because of this design, archived calendar items:

    • Do not appear as a “Calendar” folder under the In‑Place/Online Archive in Outlook or Outlook on the web.
    • Are not exposed in the visible archive folder structure, even though they may be retained in the archive mailbox.

No additional configuration will make an archive “Calendar” folder appear in Outlook or Outlook on the web. Access to archived calendar items requires using a client that can surface those items from the archive mailbox; for example, the documented workaround for online archive calendar access is to use the full Outlook client rather than Outlook on the web.
