How to Create an Administrator User or Reset Administrator Password in Windows 11 Pro

I have a brand new Lenovo LOQ laptop with Windows 11 Pro installed. When I initialized the system, it did not ask me to create an Administrator User. I created my own, but it does not have Administrator rights. I think this computer may have been used by someone else, returned and resold to me but I am not sure. Currently I cannot install software with those Administrator rights? How can I create an Administrator rights on my profile or reset the existing Administrator password?

    Hello

Can you go to Settings > Accounts > Your info, under your name there, does it say Administrator?

    Hello JuniorJim

    Thank you for reaching out!

From what you described, after setting up your Lenovo LOQ with Windows 11 Pro, your user account appears to be set up without administrator privileges, and the initial setup did not present an option to create an admin account, which is now might be limiting your ability to install software.

On a brand‑new laptop, you usually become the administrator automatically during first setup by default without explicitly being asked to create an admin account. As a first step, please check the administrator status using the method Emily suggested.

If it doesn't show admin state, it could be due to one of two situations.

    1. On some OEM‑preinstalled Windows systems, such as Lenovo LOQ laptops, the initial setup may create a standard user account instead of an administrator or leave the built‑in Administrator account hidden due to manufacturer or reseller configuration. In this case, the system may be new, but the out‑of‑box setup did not follow the usual Windows flow.
    2. Another possibility is that a user account already existed on the device before you received it, and your account was added later without administrator privileges.

In either case, Windows does not allow a standard user to grant themselves administrator rights or reset an existing administrator password. If no accessible admin account exists, the supported solution is to use Reset this PC (from Windows Recovery option) to reinstall Windows and create a fresh administrator account during setup, or to contact the seller and request a proper factory reimage or replacement if the device was sold as new.

I hope this helps clarify things. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Thank you so much for your patience.
