A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Microsoft Word 365 currently includes only APA 6th edition as a built-in citation style. APA 7th edition is not officially available in Word yet.
A community-created APA 7th edition style file can be added to Word without doing any programming by following the workaround described in Microsoft Q&A:
- Download the APASeventhED.xsl style file from the community thread referenced in the Q&A answer “APA 7th Edition in MS Word - Microsoft Community” (the file is hosted externally as noted there).
- Completely close Word.
- In File Explorer, go to:
-
C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Bibliography\Style
-
- Copy the downloaded
APASeventhED.xslfile into thatStylefolder. - Restart Word.
- Open the document, go to the References tab, and open the Style dropdown. “APA 7th edition” should now appear as an option alongside the built-in styles.
This APA 7th style is community-created and not officially provided or supported by Microsoft. Its accuracy and behavior are not guaranteed by Microsoft, and any issues with it need to be addressed through the community source where it was obtained. For official behavior, continue using the built-in APA 6th edition or format citations manually according to APA 7th guidelines.
To request official APA 7th support, submit feedback from within Word via Help > Give feedback so the product team can see the demand.
