Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Dear SteveK,
I understand you reinstalled Microsoft 365, are now on the new Outlook for Windows, and you’re unable to connect your archive.pst because Outlook Data Files is missing and you see “Outlook Data Files requires a Microsoft 365 subscription”, even though you’re licensed.
A few important notes about new Outlook and .pst files:
When a .pst can be opened in new Outlook
- Classic Outlook must also be installed, and both classic and new Outlook need to be the same architecture (both x86 or both x64).
- You must be signed into new Outlook with the Microsoft 365 account that has an active subscription.
- .pst is not supported on the ARM version of new Outlook.
- New Outlook cannot be in Safe/Recovery mode when opening a .pst.
Importing vs. opening
- Importing mail/calendar from a .pst is not supported in new Outlook. If your goal is to bring the data into your mailbox, please use classic Outlook to import (See: Import email, contacts, and calendar from an Outlook .pst file – Microsoft Support.)
Quick checks:
- In new Outlook: go to Settings > Files > Outlook Data Files and try again.
- If you still see the subscription prompt, confirm the signed-in account in new Outlook is the same licensed account.
- Verify classic Outlook is installed on the PC and that its 32/64‑bit architecture matches new Outlook.
- If you want to import (not just open/read) the archive, switch to classic Outlook and run the import there.
Thank you for your understanding and time. Have a lovely day!
