I have been having problems using my laptop..Here are some issues

  • My screen gets frozen and I get this screen that says to me to refresh. When I refresh sometimes, it either goes blank or screen just stays the same
  • I get error messages such as "the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application". Other times I get an error message that says "The installer archive is corrupted or invalid. Please download Microsoft Edge again". It does allow me to download.
  • Some other error messages I am getting are "The exception inknown software exception (0xe0000008) occured in the application at location 0x00007FFE754F73FA"
  • Also my memory space is being taken away so fast and I am at a point where I have removed all my personal folders and files but the memory space problem of getting filled up even if I am browsing still persists.

    Hi Jim Ahmed,

Thank you for sharing the details of the issues you’re experiencing.

I can see that Q&A Assist has already shared some initial guidance. Please review those steps first, as they cover basic checks. In addition, I’d like to suggest a few more steps below that may help further isolate and resolve the issue:

Step 1: Repair Windows system files

The error messages you’re seeing often occur when Windows system files or core components are damaged or incomplete. Repairing them first can help restore overall system stability.

    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
    2. Run the following command and allow it to complete: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    3. Once finished, run: sfc /scannow
    4. Restart the computer after both scans are complete

These scans check for and repair corrupted Windows files that can prevent applications from launching correctly or cause system freezes.

Step 2: Check the health of the disk and memory

System freezing, blank screens, and “unknown software exception” errors can be linked to disk or memory issues.

    • Disk check:
    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
    2. Run: chkdsk C: /f
    3. When prompted, type Y, then restart the computer so the scan can run

    Memory check

    1. Press Windows + R
    2. Type mdsched.exe and press Enter
    3. Choose Restart now and check for problems

These checks help identify file system or hardware‑related issues that may be contributing to system instability.

Step 3: Review and clean unexpected storage usage

If storage space continues to fill up even after removing personal files, temporary system files or corrupted update data may be accumulating.

    1. Go to Settings > System > Storage
    2. Select Temporary files
    3. Review and remove items such as:
    • Temporary files
    • Windows Update Cleanup (if present)
    • Delivery Optimization files

This can safely free up space used by background system processes.

Step 4: Test using a new Windows user account

If the issue continues, the current Windows user profile may be corrupted.

    1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Other users
    2. Add a new local user account
    3. Sign in to the new account and test browsing and overall system behavior

If the issue does not occur in the new account, the original user profile may need repair or replacement.

Please take your time going through these steps and let me know how things progress or if any part of the process is unclear. I’m here to help and will be glad to continue assisting you.

The symptoms point to a badly broken Edge installation and possibly broader system issues (corruption, malware, or a failing update). Use these steps to stabilize Edge first, then Windows.

    1. Restart and basic checks
    • Restart the laptop: select Start > Power > Restart.
    • After restart, try Edge again. If it still crashes or shows installer/archive errors, continue.
    1. Scan for malware Malware can cause freezes, random errors, and disk filling up.
    • On Windows 10, run a manual scan using Windows Security as described in the "Run a scan manually" section of Stay protected with Windows Security.
    • If using third‑party antivirus (Norton, McAfee, etc.), open it and run a full system scan.
    1. Verify third‑party security software is up to date Out‑of‑date security software can interfere with browsers and installers.
    • Open the security software (for example, Norton or McAfee).
    • Check for updates inside the app or on the vendor’s website and install all available updates.
    1. Clear Edge data (if Edge opens at all) If Edge can open, clear cached data that might be corrupt:
    2. In Edge, select Settings and more (… menu) > History > Open history page.
    3. Select Delete browsing data.
    4. Under Time range, choose All time.
    5. Select at least Browsing history and Cached images and files.
    6. Select Clear now.

If problems persist, clear all browsing data:

    1. Settings and more > History > Open history page.
    2. Delete browsing data > Time range: All time.
    3. Select all boxes and choose Clear now.
    4. Repair Microsoft Edge Use the built‑in repair to fix a corrupted Edge installation:
    5. Close Edge completely for all users.
    6. Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    7. Find Microsoft Edge, select it, then choose Modify.
      • If Modify is not available, Edge is managed by an organization; contact the system administrator.
    8. When prompted Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, select Yes.
    9. Ensure the laptop is connected to the internet and select Repair.
      • Browser data and settings should not be affected.
    10. Reinstall Microsoft Edge (if repair does not help) If Edge still reports “installer archive is corrupted or invalid” or will not start:
    11. Open any other working browser (for example, Chrome).
    12. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/edge and download the latest Edge installer.
    13. Run the installer to reinstall Edge on top of the existing installation.
    14. If installation still fails, restart the PC and try again.
    15. Check network and website issues Some freezes or blank pages can be due to network or site problems:
    • Try opening the same pages in another browser.
      • If they also fail, restart the modem/router.
      • If the issue continues only on specific sites, contact the site owner.
    1. Address disk space filling up Once malware scan is clean and Edge is repaired/reinstalled:
    • Clear Edge cache as above.
    • If Edge is now working, also clear all browsing data (including cached files) to reclaim space.
    • If the disk still fills rapidly even when not installing anything, that suggests:
      • Another application or Windows component is generating large logs or temp files, or
      • Underlying disk or file‑system issues (seek local technical support if the problem continues after malware scan and Edge repair).
    1. If Edge still crashes frequently
    • Use Settings and more > Help and feedback > Send feedback in Edge (if it stays open long enough) to report the issue.
    • If the system remains unstable (frequent freezes, multiple different application error codes, disk issues), consider:
      • Running full hardware diagnostics from the PC manufacturer.
      • Engaging a technician to check for deeper Windows or hardware corruption.
