Hi i

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Based on your description, I understand that you’re trying to adjust the typing (By letter) animation in PowerPoint on Mac, but the Duration option appears to be locked or isn’t behaving as expected.

To help us better understand your situation, could you please share a bit more detail:

  • Your macOS version
  • Your PowerPoint version
  • Which animation you’re currently using (such as Appear, Fade, etc.)
  • A screenshot showing the Duration option being greyed out. If possible, please share the screenshot via private message to avoid exposing any personal or organizational information.

Based on my testing on PowerPoint for Mac, I’ve noticed the following behaviors that might be relevant:

  • Some animations, such as Appear, do not support Duration adjustment, so the option may appear greyed out
  • When using “Animate text: By letter”, the animation runs character by character with a fixed timing, and PowerPoint for Mac does not include an option such as “seconds delay between letters” to adjust this timing

Because of this, what you’re experiencing may be part of how PowerPoint for Mac currently works, especially with this type of animation.

I hope this helps clarify things a bit, and I’m happy to take a closer look once you share more details.

There is no Typewriter animation effect in Mac PowerPoint. It is a sound effect which is a property of other Animation Effects. As such, it has no settings of its own. The speed is determined by the Timing [Duration] of the Animation Effect with which it is used. However, the availability of a Timing property is dependent on the Animation Effect, itself.

For example, Typewriter often is used with the Appear Entrance Animation Effect but that effect has no Timing property so the Typewriter speed can't be adjusted. OTOH, when Typewriter is used with other Animation Effects [such as Shape] there is a Duration property which can be adjusted.

On macOS PowerPoint, the “typewriter” effect is created by animating text by letter and then adjusting the delay between letters in the animation’s effect settings, not via the (locked) Duration/Speed controls on the Transitions tab.

    To speed it up:

    1. On the slide, select the text box that has the typewriter effect.
    2. Go to the Animations tab.
    3. If there is no animation yet, choose Add Animation and pick an entrance effect such as Appear, Fade In, or Fly In.
    4. On the Animations tab, select Animation Pane so the pane opens on the right.
    5. In the Animation Pane, select the animation effect for the text, then either:
      • Select the arrow next to Text Animations (Mac-specific instructions), or
      • Select the arrow next to the animation and choose Effect Options (alternate path).
    6. In the Animate text box, choose By letter if it is not already selected.
    7. Change the delay value between letters:
      • Either adjust the delay shown next to By letter, or
      • In Timing (or in the seconds delay between letters box), set a smaller value (for example, 0.1 or 0.05 seconds instead of 0.5).

A smaller delay value makes the typewriter effect much faster. PowerPoint immediately previews the animation so the new speed can be checked; repeat adjusting until the typing speed is acceptable.
