How do I fix my arrow left and right keys from not jumping from the beginning/end of my text?

Whenever I'm typing and I make an error or just want to modify the text, I don't want to have to use my cursor to go to a certain piece of text so I would preferably go back/forward 1 or more characters by using the left/right arrow key. But when I do that, rather than going one key back it goes to the ENTIRE beginning/end of my text, how do I fix this? I've tried doing my research like holding the Fn key while pressing arrows but there isn't any change and I don't think I've modified my keyboard in any way as I'm using a new one, please help.

    Hi Plooshfoonecfox,

    Thank you for reaching out.

The behavior you're encountering usually occurs when the keyboard is sending “Home” or “End” commands instead of standard Left/Right arrow key inputs. When this happens, Windows moves the cursor to the beginning or end of the text rather than one character at a time. This is most commonly related to keyboard settings, modes, or accessibility features rather than a system failure.

Please consider trying these solutions to fix the issue:

1, Check for Fn Lock or keyboard mode

    • Press Fn + Esc
    • If no change, try Fn + Caps Lock or Fn + Left Shift
    • Test the arrow keys in Notepad

2, Verify keyboard layout or mode

    • If the keyboard has a Win/Mac or PC/Mac switch, ensure it’s set to Windows/PC
    • If the keyboard includes software, confirm arrow keys are not remapped to Home/End

    3, Review Windows accessibility settings

    • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
    • Turn off:
      • Sticky Keys
      • Filter Keys
      • Toggle Keys
    • Restart and test again

    4, Reinstall the keyboard driver

    • Open Device Manager
    • Expand Keyboards
    • Right‑click the keyboard > Uninstall device
    • Restart Windows

If the issue continues, it may be related to the keyboard’s firmware or default configuration, especially with newer or compact keyboards.

What program is this happening in? Does it happen in multiple programs?

The behavior described (cursor jumping incorrectly when using arrow keys) matches a known issue in early Windows 10/Edge and a separate MMC issue, but the provided context only documents fixes for those specific cases, not for general text editing in Windows 11.

The only directly relevant, supported fix in the context is for incorrect cursor movement in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 version 1511:

To fix incorrect cursor movement in Edge text areas on that version, install a newer Windows 10 update:

    1. Install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) or
    2. Install the Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703).

This resolves the documented issue where the Up/Down arrow keys move the cursor to the wrong place in Edge text areas.

For other apps or for Windows 11, no additional, supported fix is provided in the context.
