Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
An Azure subscription can be removed while keeping and managing the Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant for Microsoft 365, but the subscription must first be canceled and, where applicable, deleted according to its offer type.
- Identify the subscription type
- If it is a free trial or pay-as-you-go subscription, it can be deleted a few days after cancellation.
- Other subscription types (for example, EA, CSP, sponsorship) are only deleted through the cancellation process and might not be directly deletable by you.
- Cancel the Azure subscription
- Use the Azure portal to cancel the subscription following the guidance in Cancel and delete your Azure subscription (linked from the context). After cancellation, billing stops immediately.
- Delete the subscription (if applicable)
- For free trial or pay-as-you-go:
- Three days after cancellation, the Delete subscription option becomes available in the Azure portal. Use it to delete the subscription.
- For other subscription types:
- The subscription is handled only through the cancellation process; direct deletion is not available. The subscription will move through its normal lifecycle after cancellation.
- For free trial or pay-as-you-go:
- Wait for data-retention period (no extra charges)
- After deletion of a subscription, Microsoft retains data for 30–90 days in case access or reactivation is needed. There is no charge for retaining this data.
- Keep and manage the tenant in Microsoft 365
- Each Azure subscription is linked to a single Microsoft Entra tenant, but the tenant itself can exist without an Azure subscription. Once all Azure subscriptions for that tenant are canceled/deleted, the tenant continues to function as the identity provider for Microsoft 365, and the two mailboxes can still be managed in Microsoft 365.
- Do not delete the Microsoft Entra tenant if continued Microsoft 365 use is required. Deleting the tenant would remove all resources and identities in that tenant.
If the long-term goal is to completely remove unused tenants and subscriptions, only delete the tenant after confirming there are no required Microsoft 365 or Azure resources in it.
