We have a tenant in Azure that we think doesn not need an Azure subscription but can be managed within M365

We have a single tenant in Azure that was transferred to us in Azure. The tenant is pretty small and only has 2 email addresses. There is no need to have an Azure subscription just to manage this one tenant. What's the easiest way to remove the Azure subscription and just keep managing the tenant in M365?

An Azure subscription can be removed while keeping and managing the Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant for Microsoft 365, but the subscription must first be canceled and, where applicable, deleted according to its offer type.

  1. Identify the subscription type
    • If it is a free trial or pay-as-you-go subscription, it can be deleted a few days after cancellation.
    • Other subscription types (for example, EA, CSP, sponsorship) are only deleted through the cancellation process and might not be directly deletable by you.
  2. Cancel the Azure subscription
    • Use the Azure portal to cancel the subscription following the guidance in Cancel and delete your Azure subscription (linked from the context). After cancellation, billing stops immediately.
  3. Delete the subscription (if applicable)
    • For free trial or pay-as-you-go:
      • Three days after cancellation, the Delete subscription option becomes available in the Azure portal. Use it to delete the subscription.
    • For other subscription types:
      • The subscription is handled only through the cancellation process; direct deletion is not available. The subscription will move through its normal lifecycle after cancellation.
  4. Wait for data-retention period (no extra charges)
    • After deletion of a subscription, Microsoft retains data for 30–90 days in case access or reactivation is needed. There is no charge for retaining this data.
  5. Keep and manage the tenant in Microsoft 365
    • Each Azure subscription is linked to a single Microsoft Entra tenant, but the tenant itself can exist without an Azure subscription. Once all Azure subscriptions for that tenant are canceled/deleted, the tenant continues to function as the identity provider for Microsoft 365, and the two mailboxes can still be managed in Microsoft 365.
    • Do not delete the Microsoft Entra tenant if continued Microsoft 365 use is required. Deleting the tenant would remove all resources and identities in that tenant.

If the long-term goal is to completely remove unused tenants and subscriptions, only delete the tenant after confirming there are no required Microsoft 365 or Azure resources in it.

    Dear @CITS Information Technology,

Good day, and thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum. From my research, you can safely remove the unnecessary Azure subscription while keeping full management of your small tenant (2 users) through Microsoft 365.

Your Microsoft 365 tenant (and the 2 email addresses) will continue to work normally. The only thing you’re removing is the extra paid Azure subscription that came with the transferred tenant. Microsoft 365 automatically includes a free/default Azure subscription for Entra ID (user/group management), so you don’t need a separate paid Azure subscription. Please follow these steps to cancel the unneeded Azure Subscription:

1.Sign in to the Azure portal

Go to https://portal.azure.com and sign in with a Global Administrator account from your tenant.

    2.Locate the Azure Subscription

In the left menu, click Cost Management + Billing > Subscriptions (or search for “Subscriptions”).

Look at the list and find the one that is not the default Microsoft 365 subscription.

    • It will usually show as Pay-As-You-Go, Enterprise Agreement, or similar.
    • The default M365 one is often labeled “Microsoft 365” or has no spending.

3.Delete all resources first (very important)

    • Click on the subscription you want to cancel.
    • Delete all resource groups and any resources inside them (VMs, storage, etc.).
    • This prevents any accidental charges after cancellation.

    4.Cancel the subscription

    • On the subscription overview page, click Cancel subscription in the top menu.
    • Follow the prompts and confirm.
    • You can delete the subscription permanently a few days later if you want.

    After cancellation:

    • You will no longer be billed for that Azure subscription.
    • Your Microsoft 365 tenant, users, email, and licenses remain completely unaffected.
    • You can continue managing everything (users, groups, email, Teams, etc.) in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center  or the Microsoft Entra Admin Center.

    Dear @CITS Information Technology,
Thank you for your update. From my research, Microsoft Learn training is free, and I was not able to find any Microsoft documentation indicating a general paid “Microsoft Learn subscription” for the training content itself. Because of this, the $29 charge is likely related to another Microsoft subscription or purchase, not Microsoft Learn training.

As a first step, please check your Services & subscriptions page and sign in using the same Microsoft account that made the purchase. If you see a subscription listed there, select Manage, then Cancel. If you see Turn on recurring billing instead, this means the subscription is already set to expire and you should not be charged again.

If you do not see a matching subscription, please follow the steps in this article to investigate unexpected charges: How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft – Microsoft Support

    Additional notes:

    • If the purchase was made through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or another third‑party retailer, cancellation and refund requests must be handled through that vendor, not Microsoft.
    • If you are signed in with the wrong Microsoft account, the subscription may not appear. Please double‑check that you are using the account that was used for the purchase.
    • When you cancel an eligible Microsoft subscription, refund eligibility is evaluated during or after the cancellation process, but Microsoft notes that not all cancellations result in a refund.

I hope this helps clarify the situation and points you in the right direction. If you found this answer helpful, please consider marking it as the accepted answer, as this helps other users with similar questions find the right guidance more easily.
