this process (as most all of MS) is a resource hog and completely annoying, unnecessary, and bothersome.

why??? how can this be disabled forever? i don't need the changing backgrounds, widgets, etc, i just need to work

    Hi psdiva,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Microsoft Edge WebView2 is a shared runtime used by Windows features and apps to display web-based content, so there is not a supported option to permanently disable it on its own without affecting dependent features. In practice, the most effective approach is to reduce which apps or services are starting it automatically.

You can try the following additional workarounds to proceed:

1, Turn off Edge Startup Boost

    • Open Microsoft Edge > go to edge://settings/system/manageSystem > turn off Startup boost.
    • This reduces the Edge background processes that can remain running after the browser is closed.

2, Review installed Edge apps and disable their auto-start

    • Open Microsoft Edge > go to edge://apps > select Details for any installed app you do not need starting with Windows > turn off Auto-start on device login.
    • If you no longer use that app, you can also uninstall it there.

3, Limit background activity for supported apps

    • Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage > select the app > Manage background activity > set it to Never where available.
    • This can help reduce background usage from apps that rely on web-based components.

If Widgets are involved, make sure the supporting components are updated. If one specific app is consistently using high resources, check with that app’s support team

I hope this helps narrow down the background component that is keeping WebView2 active. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

WebView2 (msedgewebview2.exe) cannot be disabled permanently without breaking parts of Windows and many apps. It is a core web runtime used by Windows features and applications such as Widgets, Teams, Office, Outlook, Weather, and other apps that embed web content.

    Key points:

    1. What WebView2 is doing
      • WebView2 is a control that lets apps embed web content (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) inside Windows applications.
      • Each app that uses WebView2 gets its own set of processes (manager, GPU, utility, renderer), similar to how each browser tab has its own process.
      • Extra CPU/memory usage usually comes from what the app is rendering (for example, complex or non‑optimized web content), not from WebView2 itself.
    2. Relationship to Microsoft Edge
      • WebView2 uses the same underlying engine as Microsoft Edge but is a separate runtime.
      • Uninstalling Microsoft Edge does not stop WebView2 from working; WebView2 continues to function independently.
      • Because many Windows apps and widgets depend on this engine, removing or disabling it would cause those apps and features to stop working or become unstable.
    3. What can be done in practice
      • WebView2 itself cannot be “turned off forever” without breaking dependent apps.
      • To reduce resource usage:
        • Close or disable apps and widgets that use WebView2 (for example, Widgets, some Office components, Teams, Outlook, Weather, and other web‑powered panels) so they are not running in the background.
        • Use Task Manager or tools like Process Explorer to identify which parent app is hosting the WebView2 processes and then close or uninstall that app if it is not needed.
      • In Task Manager:
        • On Windows 10/early Windows 11, WebView2 processes appear under the parent app name on the Processes tab.
        • On newer Windows 11, each WebView2 process is listed explicitly under Processes, and as msedgewebview2.exe on the Details tab.
    4. Managing startup/background behavior
      • To reduce how often Edge‑based components start automatically when signing in:
        • Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign‑in options.
        • Turn off Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign in.
      • Then review which apps/widgets are configured to start with Windows and disable those that are not needed, especially ones that show live web content.

WebView2 itself is not designed to be removed or globally disabled; controlling which apps and widgets use it and when they run is the supported way to reduce its impact.
