how do I get natural voices on my read aloud in word

truthfully I'm really tired of being forced to use Microsoft Word and Excel because the support is dreadful the settings change every time you do an update it's I spend probably five to 10 hours a week just correcting my PC to allow me to get on with work and that is a really sad reality

my problem today is quite a simple one i've always had microsoft Word installed I've always used read aloud It always defaults to a natural voice called sonia in UK English and every now and again it stops working so I close word and restart it again and it begins to work again Today it didn't do that I was advised by Chatgpt to do a repair job So I did the repair The repair uninstalled all of my office So I reinstalled the office I still can't get sonia as my default read aloud This is frustrating me and have gone through all of the traditional short term short points that I have traditionally gone down the road to fix but it's not fixable Naturally I'm not expecting an answer from this because it's Microsoft and Microsoft does not have and never has had quality support

    Hi, Marc Reader

This usually means Word has switched to a different speech route after an update, so the natural voice is still available somewhere on the PC, just not being picked up properly by the desktop app. Word and Windows/Edge do not always use exactly the same voice source, which is why a voice can still exist in one place and disappear in another.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

Open the same file in Word for the web, then go to View > Immersive Reader and test the voice there first. If the natural voice works there, it points more to a desktop Word profile/settings problem than the voice being gone completely.

It is also recommended that you test with a brand new blank document, and if that works differently, rename Normal.dotm so Word rebuilds its user template/settings. It is also suggested that trying a different Windows user profile can help confirm whether the issue is tied to your current profile only.

If you need a workaround right now, it is suggested that you save the document as PDF and use Microsoft Edge Read Aloud, or use Word for the web until the desktop app starts pulling the proper voice again.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

Natural-sounding Read Aloud voices in Word (such as UK English “Sonia”) are provided by Microsoft’s online text-to-speech services and can be affected by updates or configuration issues. When Word falls back to the older “Microsoft Zira/David/Mark” voices, it usually means Word is no longer using the newer online (Neural) voices.

From the available guidance, there are two main things to check or try:

    1. Confirm Read Aloud / online voices are available
      • Make sure Word is signed in with a Microsoft 365 account. If not, sign in.
      • Ensure the PC has a stable internet connection; Neural voices require online access.
      • Close Word completely and reopen it, then test Read Aloud again.
      • If Read Aloud itself is missing, sign out of the Microsoft 365 account in Word, close Word, reopen it, sign back in, and test again.
    2. Apply the registry-based fix that restores natural voices after an update
A known issue causes Word to switch from the natural Neural voice to the older robotic voices after an update. The moderator-recommended fix is:
      1. Close Microsoft Word.
      2. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
      3. In Registry Editor, navigate to the key indicated in the Q&A solution (the value that controls the Read Aloud voice selection).
      4. Locate the specific value used by Read Aloud under that key.
      5. Right-click that value and rename it (for example, add -1 to the end of the name).
      6. Close Registry Editor.
      7. Restart Word and test Read Aloud again.
Renaming that value forces Word to recreate its Read Aloud voice configuration, which has resolved the “natural voice replaced by robotic voice” problem for other users.

If the display language or proofing language has changed (for example, Word suddenly reading in the wrong language), verify that the document’s proofing language is set to English (United Kingdom) and that the corresponding language pack and text-to-speech support are installed in Windows. The article on downloading languages and voices explains how to add text-to-speech languages in Windows 10/11 via Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language and ensure Text-to-speech is selected.

If these steps do not restore “Sonia,” the issue is likely on the service side or tied to a recent update, and waiting for a subsequent update or using another available UK English Neural voice (if offered) may be the only workaround until Microsoft resolves it.

I'm really sorry that you are having so much trouble with Word and Excel. I have been using both for decades and through many iterations of what used to be simply called 'Microsoft Office' without ever having trouble. Perhaps you should consider whether changes that you might have made to your PC are the root cause of your problems.

To your main question: I asked ChatGPT (which I prefer over the frenemy Copilot) where to find alternative voices for text-to-speech for Microsoft Word. You can get these voices within the Microsoft world and from third parties.

In Windows 11, go to Settings > Time & language > Speech > Manage voices > Add voices. For example, with one click you can install all the English-United Kingdom voices, however Sonia may not be included. Ordinarily, Microsoft Sonia is a Dynamics 365 voice that you can install from the Azure Speech Studio. (Scroll down to 'Explore the Voice Gallery'.)
