Hibernate only shuts down PC

Hello Support, after installing the latest Windows 11 update, the hibernate function only shuts down my computer. I have tried every troubleshooting step I could find, but the issue still isn’t resolved. The hibernate option is still visible in the power menu, but it only performs a shutdown when selected. I’d appreciate any help on how to get this working properly again. Thank you.

    Hi Kkby,

    Thanks for sharing the details.

Since Hibernate is still listed but behaves like a normal shutdown, this usually points to either Windows using the wrong hibernation file type or the device still being on a build affected by a recent power-state issue.

Here are some possible checking steps that you can try at this point:

1, Force Windows to use the full hibernation file

    • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: powercfg /h /type full
    • Then restart the PC and test Hibernate again.

2, Install the latest cumulative Windows update - go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install everything available.

If Hibernate still acts like a shutdown after that, please share your Windows version/build number (for example, 23H2 / OS Build xxxxx) and whether Device Security shows Secure Launch or VSM enabled. That will help narrow down whether this is still update-related or specific to the device’s security/power configuration.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

    Hi Kkby,

Thank you for posting your question here!

The straight to the point approach we usually take is to first confirm that Windows still supports hibernate at the system level. Please open Command Prompt as administrator and run powercfg /a. If Hibernate is missing or shows as not available, that is the root cause. If it is missing, run powercfg /hibernate on, reboot, and test again.

If Hibernate shows as available but selecting it still shuts the device down, this is commonly tied to Fast Startup or a corrupted hiberfil.sys after updates. In that case, turn off Fast Startup from Control Panel, Power Options, choose what the power buttons do, change settings currently unavailable, then uncheck Turn on fast startup, save, and reboot. After that, rebuild the hibernate file by running

powercfg /hibernate off, restart, then powercfg /hibernate on, and restart again. If the behavior still mimics a shutdown, check the BIOS or firmware, as some OEM updates disable S4 hibernate and force S5 shutdown, especially on systems using Modern Standby S0, which is known to be buggy after recent updates. Let me know what powercfg /a returns and whether this is a laptop or desktop so we can align on the right fix path.

    Best regards,

    Angelique P.

Hello Angelique. Appreciate you answering this post. I tried all the steps you mentioned and even checked the registry to see if hibernate is enabled and it is. Still, nothing is working.
