PUBLISHER RETIRE

Hello, good afternoon,

What program do you suggest if Publisher is going to be retiring? I use it for Church bulletins and I have tried Word and Affinity and its very frustrating to work with programs like that especially when Publisher is great. I have been using it for many years and I would like to know what will be replacing it? And if no replacement, then why not? Why get rid of it. So many people are so upset about this and would really love it if we could still use Publisher and that it won't expire in October 2026. It was part of our purchase and we do not want it taken away.

Please advise.

Thank you.

    Hello @Patrice Bailey

I see that many users also feel disappointed that Microsoft Publisher will end of support in October like you. As an independent advisor, I truly regret this change, but I believe it’s a decision made by the Microsoft product team and unfortunately not something we can influence.

I understand that using one application for many years creates a strong habit so transitioning to something new can be frustrating, not just for you but for many others as well.

Microsoft has not announced a direct replacement. Instead, they are shifting toward tools like Word, PowerPoint, and newer platforms such as Microsoft Designer. However, it will certainly not be the same as the Publisher app, especially for detailed layouts like church bulletins.

    For your reference:

Microsoft Publisher will no longer be supported after October 2026 - Microsoft Support

    Microsoft Designer | Microsoft 365

If these apps are still not suitable, I hope you can figure out the suitable apps that will match your demand soon.

Microsoft Publisher will reach end of life in October 2026. After that time, it will no longer be included in Microsoft 365, and Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to open or edit Publisher files in Publisher. Support for the perpetual (one-time purchase) versions of Publisher will also end on October 1, 2026, when Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support, though those perpetual apps can still be installed and used beyond that date.

There is no single direct replacement app for Publisher. Instead, many common Publisher scenarios are already supported in other Microsoft 365 apps. For church bulletins and similar publications, the recommended alternatives are primarily Word and PowerPoint, which both provide:

    • Professionally branded templates
    • Layout tools for multi-page documents
    • Support for images, text effects, and printing

For other typical Publisher uses, the recommended Microsoft 365 apps are:

    • Ads or flyers – Word, PowerPoint, or Designer
    • Brochures – Word or PowerPoint
    • Banners, signs, posters – PowerPoint or Designer
    • Certificates – Word or PowerPoint
    • Business cards – Word or PowerPoint
    • Business invoices, applications, forms – Word
    • Calendars – Word or PowerPoint
    • Envelopes – Word
    • Labels – Word
    • Letterhead – Word
    • Newsletters – Word
    • Programs and folded paper projects – Word
    • Cards (greeting, compliment, etc.) – Word, PowerPoint, or Designer

    Existing Publisher files:

    • Microsoft 365 subscribers can continue to use Publisher with current functionality until October 2026.
    • After that date, Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to open or edit Publisher files in Publisher.
    • It is recommended to convert important Publisher files to PDF or Word format before that date so they remain accessible.
    • If using a perpetual version of Publisher, files can still be opened and edited after support ends, but there will be no new updates or support.

For new designs and templates going forward, Microsoft 365 apps such as Word and PowerPoint, along with templates available at Microsoft Create, are the suggested path.
