Hi @Sheryl,
Thank you for your detailed question.
You just proposed a great use case, but it does run into a limitation of how Word builds a Table of Contents.
There is no built-in way to automatically prepend a checkbox symbol (e.g., Wingdings 168) to each TOC entry using styles alone, without affecting the original headings in the document.
- A Word Table of Contents is generated from heading text or fields, not independently formatted content.
- The formatting you can control is limited to TOC styles (TOC 1, TOC 2, etc.), which primarily affect font, spacing, and layout, not adding prefix characters per entry.
Because of this, Word does not support adding a symbol “before each entry” as a dynamic rule.
However, you may consider the suggestion provided by Volunteer Moderator John Korchok as an alternative workaround
Additionally, I believe you just propose a great use case, and it could be greatly impacting and evaluating to your workflow, I highly recommend submitting a suggestion directly from Word by navigating to: Word · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.
