To create a new Microsoft account and get past the “press and hold” verification, follow these steps and workarounds based on known issues with that control:

    1. Create the account in the standard way
      1. Go to the Microsoft account sign-up page: https://signup.live.com (or select Create an account from any Microsoft sign-in page).
      2. Enter the Gmail address intended for the new account.
      3. Follow the prompts to enter name, country/region, birthdate, and complete email verification when the code is sent.
If a new email address is preferred instead of using Gmail, first create an Outlook.com address:
      1. Go to outlook.com.
      2. Select Create free account and complete the steps.
      3. Use that new Outlook.com address as the Microsoft account sign-in.
    2. Address the “press and hold” verification issue The “press and hold” human verification can fail repeatedly when something in the browser interferes with the control. A common cause is content blockers:
      1. Temporarily disable ad blockers or content/privacy extensions
        • Turn off any ad blocker or tracking protection extension in the browser.
        • If using a built-in tracking protection feature, set it to a less strict mode temporarily.
        • Then reload the sign-up page and try the “press and hold” verification again.
In a similar case, the verification started working as soon as the ad blocker was disabled.
      2. Try a different device
        • If multiple browsers on the same device all fail, switch to another device (for example, a phone or another PC) and repeat the sign-up.
      3. Use an alternate sign-up path
        • If creating the account as part of setting up a new Windows PC and the verification keeps failing, first set up the PC with a local account, then later change it to a Microsoft account using the documented path to Change from a local account to a Microsoft account.
    3. Handle “too many codes sent” / rate limiting When too many verification codes have been requested in a short time, the system temporarily rate-limits further attempts:
      1. Stop requesting new codes and wait for the temporary limit to clear (this can take some time; avoid repeated retries during this period).
      2. After waiting, start a fresh sign-up attempt in a clean browser session (Private/Incognito) with ad blockers disabled and complete the verification once.
    4. If still unable to create the account
      • Use an alternate sign-up method: for example, create the account with a different email address or phone number, then later add the desired Gmail address as an alias from the account’s profile.
      • If setting up a new PC, use an existing Microsoft account temporarily, then add your new account later once the sign-up succeeds.

Note: Addresses used for Microsoft accounts cannot be reused. If that Gmail address was ever used before for a Microsoft account (even one that was closed), it cannot be used again as a brand-new Microsoft account sign-in.

    Hi spokorot,

Please try creating an account using another network, such as using your smartphone / reboot your modem to get new IP / connect to your mobile hotspot, etc.

If your problem persists, please feel free to let me know.
