    Dear @Gary de Bruin,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that you accidentally purchased a Microsoft Family plan instead of a Business plan. You’re looking to switch from the Family plan to a Business plan and want to know whether you need to pay for a full new subscription or if the amount you’ve already paid can be reduced or credited toward the Business plan.

Regarding this matter, Microsoft Family and Microsoft Business plans are billed separately, so they can’t be directly converted from one to the other.

    Therefore, I would recommend:

Purchase Business Plan and cancel Family Plan

    • You will need to purchase a new Business subscription (such as Microsoft 365 Business Basic or Business Standard).
    • Once your Business plan is active, you can cancel the Family plan.
    • If your Family subscription was purchased recently, you may be eligible for a partial or full refund for the unused time.
    • To cancel your Family subscription, please reach out to: Contact us
      • Type 'Contact' in the search box.
      • Now click 'Get help', and select 'Contact Support' or 'Sign in to contact support' below.
      • Go to the 'Products and services' tab, and choose 'Microsoft 365 and Office' category.
      • On the 'Category' tab, choose 'Manage account subscription'.
      • Go to 'Confirm'.
      • You can now choose the option of 'Chat with a support agent' on your web browser.

Important Note: The Chat support team only works at certain work times, (Monday to Friday: 9am to 6pm. Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) so if the last window says you are not available, try to open it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. That way, they can call you and help you.

For reference: Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you.

Kindly let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for your time and patience.

There is no direct method available to switch from a Microsoft 365 subscription to another edition like the business version, you need to cancel your Microsoft 365 subscription using the steps provided on this link to get a pro-rata refund for that subscription, then take out a new subscription for the plan you do need.

Switching from Microsoft 365 Family (a home plan) to a Microsoft 365 for business subscription is treated as moving to a different product family, not as a simple in-place upgrade.

    From the provided information:

    • It is possible to move from Microsoft 365 Family to a business subscription.
    • The business subscription is purchased separately; there is no indication of an automatic price reduction or credit based solely on having an active Family subscription.
    • Guidance is to follow the process in “Switch from Microsoft 365 for home to a business subscription,” which describes how to move documents and files, not how to reuse or discount the existing home subscription payment against the business plan.

    In practice this means:

    • A new Microsoft 365 for business subscription must be purchased at its normal price.
    • The existing Family subscription remains a separate home plan; it can be kept for personal use or canceled according to its terms.

For help choosing and switching to a business plan, see the business plan chooser and the “Switch from an individual Microsoft 365 subscription to Microsoft 365 for business” guidance in the referenced articles.
