Edge will not open after 5/5 update

I tried to open Edge on Tuesday, 5/5/26. It initially opened with a white screen then immediately crashed. Since that happened, I have also been unable to open various other apps on my desktop as well as Goodge Drive and other folder shortcuts. The Modify and Uninstall buttons in Apps & Features for Edge are greyed out and there is no option for any advanced functions or troubleshooting.

Edge and other apps failing to open after an update usually indicates a corrupted Edge installation or a system issue affecting multiple apps. Use the following steps in order:

  1. Restart the PC
  • A running process may be blocking Edge and other apps.
  • Select Start > Power > Restart, then try opening Edge again.
  1. Check for malware
  • Malware can cause browsers and apps to crash immediately.
  • On Windows 10, run a full scan using Windows Security (see the "Run a scan manually" section in Stay protected with Windows Security).
  • If third‑party security software (for example, Norton or McAfee) is installed, open it and check for updates, then run a full scan.
  1. Try repairing Microsoft Edge (if available) If the Modify button becomes available again:
  2. Close Edge for all users on the device.
  3. Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Select Microsoft Edge > Modify.
  5. Approve the UAC prompt (Yes), ensure the device is online, then select Repair.
  6. Clear Edge data (if Edge can briefly open) If Edge opens long enough to access settings:
  7. Select Settings and more (⋯) > History > Open history page.
  8. Select Delete browsing data.
  9. Set Time range to All time.
  10. Select at least Browsing history and Cached images and files, then Clear now.
  11. Restart Edge.
  12. Reinstall Microsoft Edge using a different browser If Edge still will not open and cannot be modified/uninstalled:
  13. Open any other working browser.
  14. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/edge.
  15. Download the Edge installer and run it to reinstall Edge on top of the existing installation.
  16. Restart the PC and test Edge again.
  17. Check network and site issues (if only some pages fail) If after reinstall Edge opens but some pages still fail:
  18. Try the same page in another browser.
  19. If it also fails, restart the modem/router.
  20. If the issue persists only for a specific site, contact that site’s owner.

If these steps do not resolve the issue and other desktop apps still fail to open, the problem is likely broader than Edge (for example, system corruption). In that case, after confirming malware scans are clean, consider contacting Microsoft Support for deeper repair options.
