Unable to select Transcribe Only in Teams meetings

I am experiencing an issue where our users are unable to select "Transcribe only" in Meeting options when setting up a Teams meeting. Selecting it and clicking Save returns the below, which doesn't give me a lot to go off:

Strangely, if "Record and transcribe" is selected it work fine, and users are able to start transcription from within the meeting once it begins.

We haven't made any recent changes to our applied policies and to my eye they look correct

Wondering if anyone can provide some insight to what's going wrong. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

From what you've share, I understand that users can select “Transcribe only” in Meeting options, but when they click Save, Teams shows “Something went wrong. Try again” At the same time, “Record and transcribe” saves correctly, and users can still start transcription manually after the meeting begins.'

I would like to clarify that the “Transcribe only” option is a new automatic meeting setting in Teams that allows transcription to start automatically without creating a recording. Because this capability is rolling out across tenants, some organizations may temporarily see the option in Meeting Options, but when they click Save the service may not yet accept the setting, resulting in a generic “Something went wrong. Try again” message. However, “Transcribe only” also depends on admin policy.

Please also ask that admin verify these two items:

1/ Organizer policy allows transcription In Teams admin center > Meetings > Meeting policies > Recording & transcription > confirm Transcription = On for the organizer’s policy.

2/ If your tenant has “Who can record and transcribe” set to “No one” If that meeting option is set to No one, Teams will force automatic transcription options (including “Transcribe only”) to be off

Hey there Doris!

I can confirm that users in my organization are experiencing the same thing. When creating a new meeting (through New Outlook or through Teams itself) if they select Transcribe only, they get the error shown in the original screenshot. If we choose Transcribe and Record, it saves just fine.

I also attempted editing an existing meeting and setting it to "Transcribe Only" but the same error happens. Again, Record & Transcribe works fine.

I've checked the Teams admin center and can confirm that the org wide Transcription setting is toggled on:

I have also verified that Transcription is turned on for other areas including voicemail.

I would also just inform that we are experiencing same issue in our company for more than a week. We are able to start recording/transcript manually, also set transcript + recording automatically, but no auto transcript alone. It seems like MS teams client supports the selection of this option, but server does not, which is a funny way to roll out a feature. 🙃

As I explain, at the moment, some tenants can already see the option in Meeting options, but the backend may not yet fully accept the setting, which results in the “Something went wrong. Try again” error when saving. This would also explain why “Record and transcribe” and manual transcription continue to work.

Microsoft has updated message center post MC1283816 and now expects the rollout to complete by early June 2026.

Please also ask your admin to confirm:

Transcription is enabled in the organizer’s meeting policy.

“Who can record and transcribe” is not set to “No one”.
