.SVG Files no longer save in Word

Hello,

Please could someone investigate why .SVG when you insert them through Link to File, no longer saves the Word document and loses all saving capabilities? This has happened overnight since a Windows update and I've lost quite a bit of work now.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks

I can reproduce this problem in Word for Windows version 2604 (Build 19929.20172 Click-to-Run). You can use Help>Feedback>Report a problem to report this bug.

    Dear @Elizabeth Carter,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that when inserting .SVG files into Word using Link to File, the document no longer saves correctly. Instead, Word remains stuck on “Saving…” and prompts a Save As loop when closing. This issue started after a recent Windows update and occurs regardless of whether the SVG file is local or sourced online, leading to loss of work.

To better understand and isolate the behavior, could I ask a few quick questions:- Does this issue happen in all Word documents, or only specific ones?

    • If you insert the same SVG using Insert > Pictures (not linked), does the issue still occur?
    • Are other file types (e.g., PNG, JPG) showing similar behavior when linked?
    • Which version of Microsoft 365 Apps for Business and Windows are you currently using?
    • Are your files stored on OneDrive/SharePoint or entirely local when this happens?

Your confirmation would be very helpful in ensuring you receive the most suitable support!

In the meantime, kindly try the following suggestions to check what might have caused the issue:

    • Test without linking: If this works, it may indicate an issue specifically with linked objects rather than SVGs themselves.
      • Insert the .SVG file without using “Link to File”
      • Go to Insert > Pictures > This Device
      • Select the SVG without ticking “Link to File”
    • Update Office: Open any Office app > File > Account > Update Options > Update Now
    • Start Word in Safe Mode: If it works fine in Safe Mode, an add-in may be causing the issue.
      • For example: Open Word > Press Windows + R, type: winword /safe
      • Try reproducing the issue
    • Repair Office: Please refer to this article for step-by-step instructions: Repair an Office application

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!

Thank you for your time and patience.
