To keep Windows 11 intact and get more space on C:, there are two main approaches: free up space, and (if possible) extend the C: partition.

    1. Free up space on C: (recommended first)

    a. Use Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations

    1. Select Start > Settings > System > Storage.
    2. Turn on Storage Sense to automatically delete temporary files and items in Recycle Bin.
    3. In the same Storage page, select Cleanup recommendations.
    4. Go through each category:
      • Temporary files
      • Large or unused files
      • Files synced to the cloud
      • Unused apps Select items to remove, then choose Clean up for each section. Note: If it has been fewer than 10 days since an upgrade, deleting the previous version of Windows (Windows.old) frees space but removes the option to roll back.

    b. Move new personal files to another drive

    1. Connect another internal or external drive if available.
    2. Select Start > Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
    3. For each content type (documents, music, pictures, videos, etc.), choose a different drive from the drop-down.

    c. Use OneDrive to offload files

    1. Turn on OneDrive Files On-Demand so only placeholders stay on C: and full files stay in the cloud.
    2. For details, see Save disk space with OneDrive Files On-Demand for Windows (linked in the referenced article).
    3. Extend the C: drive (if there is free space on the same disk)

If the physical disk that contains C: has unallocated space, C: can be extended without reinstalling Windows, but only if that unallocated space is directly next to C:.

    a. Check the partition layout

    1. Select Start, type disk management, then open Disk Management.
    2. In the lower pane, locate Disk 0 (or the disk that has C:) and review the order of partitions.
    3. Look for Unallocated space and see whether it is immediately to the right of the C: partition.

    b. Make unallocated space contiguous with C:

    • If there is a partition between C: and the unallocated space, the built-in tool cannot extend C: over it.
    • In that case, either:
      • Move or delete the partition between C: and the unallocated space using a third-party partition tool, or
      • Back up the data from that partition, delete it in Disk Management to create unallocated space directly next to C:, then later recreate/restore it after extending C:.

Always back up important data before changing partitions.

    c. Extend C:

    1. In Disk Management, right-click the C: partition.
    2. If Extend Volume is available (not grayed out), select it.
    3. Follow the wizard to add the unallocated space to C:.

If Extend Volume is grayed out, it means there is no unallocated space directly next to C:, and the intermediate partition must be moved/removed as described above.

    1. If still low on space for upgrades

If Windows 11 feature updates still fail due to low disk space even after cleanup, consider:

    • Using an external drive to complete the update (see the external storage guidance in the drive-space article).
    • As a last resort, resetting or reinstalling Windows, which is also mentioned as an option when space cannot be freed sufficiently.
