I get update notices, my PC won't update. It is a Windows 7 Home Edition, I know updates for W7 has stopped, There should be a way to fix it to update regardless.By making a repair disk for this system the way it is, may not help.

    Hi Duane,

A Windows 7 PC is probably not able

to run Windows 11. Run this and it will

provide you if it is or isn't:

Windows 7 cannot be updated directly to Windows 11 through Windows Update, and Windows 7 itself no longer receives updates. The context provided only covers troubleshooting Windows Update on Windows 10 and Windows 11, plus repair/reinstall options for Windows 11, so only those supported paths can be described.

For devices already on Windows 10 or Windows 11 that fail to update, the documented options are:

    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter (Windows 11)
      • Use the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app to diagnose and fix common Windows Update issues.
    2. General and advanced Windows Update troubleshooting (Windows 10/11)
      • Back up personal files first.
      • Use commands like DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt to repair system files, then try Windows Update again.
      • If needed, rename SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders and restart the BITS and Windows Update services.
    3. Reinstall or repair the current Windows 11 version
      • Use Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now to reinstall the current Windows 11 version while preserving apps, documents, and settings.
    4. Clean installation or in-place repair of Windows 11
      • Download Windows 11 installation media or ISO from the official software download page and run Setup.exe, choosing to keep files and apps for an in-place repair, or perform a clean installation if repair is not sufficient.

These procedures apply only once the device is on Windows 10 or Windows 11; they do not provide a supported upgrade path from Windows 7 Home to Windows 11.
