Windows 10 ESU beyond October 2026

Hello,

I have been trying to understand how to ensure that my Windows 10 ESU will extend beyond the October 2026 cutoff for regular uses. We utilize the OS on a computer at my institution that does not have the hardware requirements to upgrade to Windows 11, so we will need the extra time to work new computers that are compatible into our budget.

Could you provide information regarding how to ensure my ESU is extended beyond the 2026 cutoff for regular users?

Thank you.

Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) are only available for a limited time and cannot be extended indefinitely beyond the program’s defined end.

    From the provided information:

    • Mainstream support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025.
    • The consumer ESU program for Windows 10:
      • Is available only for devices running Windows 10, version 22H2 (Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstation) with the latest updates installed.
      • Provides critical and important security updates only (no new features, nonsecurity fixes, or general technical support).
      • Allows enrollment any time until the program ends on October 13, 2026.
      • Delivers ESU updates “for at least one year after the end of support date,” i.e., from October 14, 2025, through the ESU program end date in October 2026.

The documentation does not describe any ESU option for Windows 10 that continues beyond the ESU program end date (October 13, 2026) for either consumers or organizations. The stated options for continuing to use Windows 10 after October 14, 2025 are:

    • Continue using Windows 10 without support or security updates (not recommended), or
    • Enroll in the paid ESU program to receive security updates only, up to the ESU program end.

There is no supported mechanism in the provided material to ensure ESU coverage for Windows 10 beyond the ESU program’s end date. Planning should therefore assume:

    1. Enroll eligible Windows 10, version 22H2 devices in ESU to cover the period October 2025 → October 2026.
    2. Budget and schedule hardware and OS upgrades so that affected systems are replaced or transitioned to a supported Windows version by the time the ESU program ends.

    Hello Bell Planetarium,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

The duration of the ESU program depends on the edition you are using. ESU program that is offered to home user have 1 year duration and cannot be extended. However, for enterprise and educational customers, the program can be purchased to be extended for up to 3 years. The organization IT department can purchase them using the admin center. Here is the link for you to find information you need about the ESU program.
