I'm trying to make a table contents. When I highlight a text for level 2 it highlights the entire paragraph! I only want the first line to appear. how do i make that happen?

You can make only the first part of a paragraph appear in a TOC, by creating a Style Separator at the point where the TOC text should stop. Then apply your level 2 heading to the text to the left of the style separator. Apply a body text level style to the text to the right of the style separator, so that text is not displayed in the TOC.

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I suggest that you put the heading on its own line, for me this is the best method. It looks like this.

Chapter First – This provides step by step process...

(If your setup is like this it will highlight everything)

But if you do it like this, it should not highlight everything.

    Chapter First

This provides step by step process...

You need to select "Chapter First" and apply heading 2. Leave the paragraph underneath as normal text.

Your result would only show "Chapter First" in your table of contents.

In Word, a table of contents is built from entire paragraphs that have a heading style or outline level applied. It is not possible to include only part of a paragraph (for example, just the first line) as a separate TOC entry while leaving the rest of that paragraph as normal text.

To have only the first line appear as a Level 2 entry, that first line must be its own paragraph with a heading style (for example, Heading 2) applied:

    1. Place the cursor at the end of the first line that should appear in the TOC.
    2. Press Enter to split the text so that the first line becomes a separate paragraph.
    3. Select that new paragraph and apply the desired heading style (e.g., Heading 2) from Home > Styles.
    4. Leave the remaining text as normal body text in the following paragraph.
    5. Update the table of contents (References > Table of Contents > Update Table) so only that heading paragraph appears at Level 2.

If the TOC is already created, it can be customized or formatted via References > Table of Contents > Custom table of contents, but this still works at the paragraph level, not on highlighted fragments.
