A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
Hello @Sipho Khumalo,
I understand how frustrating it can be when familiar buttons suddenly disappear, especially something as essential as Undo and Redo. Let’s walk through this together step by step to bring them back.
Step 1: Check the Quick Access Toolbar
The Undo and Redo buttons normally appear in the top-left corner of Excel.
- Look at the top-left area of the Excel window.
- Click the small drop-down arrow next to the toolbar.
- In the menu that appears:
- Select Undo
- Select Redo
If they were just hidden, this will immediately bring them back.
Step 2: Add the buttons manually
If you don’t see Undo and Redo in that list, try adding them manually.
- Click the same drop-down arrow
- Choose More Commands…
- In the new window:
- Change “Choose commands from” to All Commands
- Scroll down the list and find:
- Undo
- Redo
- Select each one and click Add >>
- Click OK
You should now see both buttons again.
Step 3: Reset the toolbar (if needed)
If things still don’t look right, a reset can restore the default layout. In the same settings as the previous step:
- Right-click anywhere on the toolbar area
- Click Customize Quick Access Toolbar
- Select Reset
- Choose Reset only Quick Access Toolbar
- Click OK
This will bring back the standard set of buttons, including Undo and Redo.
Step 4: Check the Ribbon display
Sometimes the toolbar isn’t gone, it’s just hidden.
- Click the Ribbon Display Options button (top-right corner)
- Make sure Hide Quick Access Toolbar is unchecked
Temporary workaround: Use keyboard shortcuts (while fixing)
Even if the buttons aren’t visible, these still work:
- Undo: Ctrl + Z
- Redo: Ctrl + Y or Ctrl + Shift + Z
If you’re still not seeing the buttons after these steps, let me know what your screen looks like and I’ll guide you more precisely.
Thank you for sharing your question and I wish you a great day!
