    Hello Nicholas Farrington,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

It's unfortunate to hear that your laptop has been stolen. The "Find my device" option could give you details of your computer location for City or district level at most. So it is still a large area to search.

Also, how that function works is that when your computer is powered and online. The device will transmit the location periodically to Microsoft Services, which will link it to your Microsoft account. However, it can only work if the computer is both turn on and connected to the internet. So the location you see might just be the last time the computer is online when your account still signed in. So if the thief has already wiped your computer, the tracking could also be lost.

In this case, I'd be more worries about your data and account safety. In this case, I suggest that you should change the password of all emails and account that is on that computer. This will sign them out of the laptop and protect your data.

    Thank you for your understanding.

Unless your computer has a built in GPS device, any estimate of its location is at best an estimate. At this point, forget about your computer. Worry about protecting your identity!

Find my device uses the device’s last reported GPS/Wi‑Fi/IP-based location, so it can usually show the general area on a map but is not guaranteed to be precise to a specific house, apartment, or room. Signal quality, nearby Wi‑Fi networks, and when the device was last online all affect accuracy, and the location can fluctuate within a wider radius.

Because of this, the map location should be treated as approximate, not as legally or physically verified evidence of an exact address. For recovery and safety, law enforcement should handle any on‑site follow‑up using the information available.

To protect data on the stolen PC and account:

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices, open Find My Device, and use Lock on the stolen PC so it requires the Microsoft account password to sign in.
    2. Immediately follow the hacked-account recovery guidance for the Outlook.com/Microsoft account to reset the password and review security info and sign‑in activity.
    3. If identity theft is suspected (personal information exposed), follow the identity theft steps: file a police report, place a fraud alert on credit reports, and close or secure any affected financial or online accounts.
