Hi

I am using the new outlook app on a PC. When I send an email it is default sending from an alias not my primary account. There is no option to change this in settings and it is showing correct on my microsoft account.

Any ideas from the community?

Thanks

    Hi James Potter

I understand that in the new Outlook app on your PC, emails are being sent from an alias instead of your primary account, even though your Microsoft account shows the correct primary address.

Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, could you confirm:

    • Are you using a Outlook.com alias (e.g., @outlook.com / @hotmail.com) or a third-party alias (e.g., Gmail added as alias)?

In the meantime, since you mentioned your Microsoft account already shows the correct primary alias, please try a couple of targeted steps below to refresh or correct the behavior:

1, Force refresh account settings in New Outlook

    • Close New Outlook completely
    • Reopen it
    • If prompted, sign out and sign back in

This ensures the app re-syncs your alias configuration.

2, Manually select the correct “From” once

    • Click “New mail”
    • Click the “From” dropdown
    • Select your correct primary address

In some cases, Outlook remembers the last manually selected “From” for future emails.

    3, Re-add the account

    • Go to “Settings” > “Accounts” > “Email accounts”
    • Remove your account
    • Add it back again

This helps if the alias mapping didn’t sync correctly during initial setup.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes. Thank you for your time and understanding.

In New Outlook for Windows, the default From address is controlled by the primary alias on the Microsoft account, not by a separate Outlook setting. If New Outlook is defaulting to an alias instead of the intended primary address, the fix is to change which alias is set as the primary on the Microsoft account, then re-authenticate New Outlook.

    Use this sequence:

    1. Change the primary alias
      1. Go to the Microsoft account website and sign in.
      2. Select Your info.
      3. Select Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
      4. Add another alias if needed (for example, an Outlook.com address) using Add email.
      5. Set the desired email address as the primary alias.
      6. Remove or demote the alias that should not be used as the default From address.
    2. Refresh New Outlook
      1. Close New Outlook.
      2. Reopen New Outlook and, if prompted, sign in again with the Microsoft account.
      3. Verify that new messages now default to the correct From address.

If the alias being used is a non-Outlook.com address that was added as a Microsoft account alias, switching the primary alias to an Outlook.com/Hotmail.com address and then adding the non-Outlook.com account as a separate mail account in New Outlook can also resolve incorrect default From behavior.
