How to fix error 0xc0000142 which is stopping me running Sailwave program.

I was advised to start this new thread. My pc is Windows 11 home build 25H2 and is up to date.

I have used Sailwave version 2.38.2-1 and earlier versions for many years up to last week OK.

But now I get error 0xc0000142. Yet the same program works on another up to date Windows 11 pc.

It also works on a new user to my pc. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Sailwave from their website https://www.sailwave.com/category/sailwave

Please can someone help?

I found your problem in your first procmon trace.

You have compatibility mode set to "Run the program as an administrator in Windows 95 mode".

Using explorer right click saliwave.exe and select properties. In the Compatibility tab uncheck everything and click ok.

Or launch regedit and remove the sailwave entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers.

    Hi Ramesh,

    Sorry I was testing the older version of Sailwave and forgot to change it back to the latest version.

    My User Account Control is also set to default.

    Sailwave works in another admin account and also a non admin account .

    I have run ProcessMonitor in my account again and the resulting log is in this link:

    You are not running the most current version of the software. The trace shows that you are running version 2.34.

    I also see that the link that you used to launch the program uses the short 8.3 name, C:\PROGRA~2 and not the full C:\Program Files (x86). That shouldn't cause a problem but it is "different".

    Run the uninstall again. Verify that the C:\Program Files (x86)\Sailwave folder was deleted.

    Then install the current version.

    Verify that Sailwave.exe is version 2.38.2.0.

    In the trace I see that consent.exe was launched. That is the UAC prompt. I do not get that on my test VM. Open Settings and search for UAC.

    Here is what mine is set at. Check yours.

    In your first question, I asked if the other programs worked. After you get the current version installed, try other programs. Do you get the 142 error? Do you get a UAC prompt?

    Open a command prompt (non-admin) and CD to that folder. Try running those programs. Languageid.exe did not do anything.

    Also try running sailwave.exe from the prompt, without the "open=c:\NottsCountySC...." argument. Were you changing the NTFS security permissions on that c:\NottsCountySC folder perhaps? Maybe run the current 2.34 Sailwave.exe program from a command prompt and see if launches without the open= argument.

    Maybe the problem is with the shortcut and not the program itself.

    Please run a Process Monitor trace to narrow down the issue. Here are the instructions:

    • Download Process Monitor from Microsoft.
    • Run Process Monitor.
    • If the Filtering Options dialog appears, click Reset and click OK.
    • Click on the capture button on the tool bar if it's not already enabled.

    • Process Monitor will trace the events.
    • Now, try to start Sailwave .
    • When the error occurs, switch to Process Monitor and stop tracing.
    • Save the Process Monitor entries to a log file (.PML) with "All events" selected.
    • Zip the PML file and upload it to OneDrive or GoFile.io and share the link here.
