Please add a visible setting to turn off AI model training in the Copilot app

I’m a web agency owner and I can’t find the “Model training” setting in the Copilot app, even though Microsoft’s support page says it’s there. Because I can’t confirm my data isn’t used for training, I can’t use Copilot for client work. Can you tell me exactly where to find it? It would be great if you could please make this setting easy to find.

I found the version in Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps: Copilot 155.0.4283.62.

Can you confirm whether this version uses the updated experience covered by your policy stating that prompts, responses, and file contents aren’t used to train foundation models, including with a personal Microsoft account? There is no model-training toggle visible in my app.

    Hi Karen,

Thank you for sharing the build number. I would not use version 155.0.4283.62 by itself as confirmation that all prompts, responses, and uploaded file contents in the standalone Copilot app are excluded from foundation-model training.

Microsoft explicitly provides that assurance for Copilot used inside Microsoft 365 apps for home. The older documentation describing a model-training toggle is marked as applying only to the previous Copilot experience, and the available documentation does not appear to map individual Copilot build numbers to a specific privacy policy.

Because your concern involves client-confidential information, the safest next step is to request confirmation from Microsoft Support for this specific build and personal-account experience before using it for client work. You may also send feedback through the Copilot app asking Microsoft to display the applicable data-protection status directly in the interface.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum, so contributors cannot inspect your account settings or verify back-end data handling for a particular app version. I know this isn't the news you were hoping for, but I wanted to make sure you got the most accurate information about your situation. Thank you so much for your understanding.

The visible training controls are available only in the older consumer Copilot experience; the updated Copilot app introduced on August 18, 2026 no longer follows that documented menu path, while work or school accounts do not show the setting because their prompts and responses are excluded from foundation-model training.^1^

If you have the older consumer Copilot app

Sign in with your personal Microsoft account, then use the path for your platform:

    • Windows or macOS: Profile icon → Settings → Privacy
    • Mobile: Menu → Profile icon → Account → Privacy
    • Copilot.com: Profile icon → Profile name → Privacy

    Turn off both:

    • Training on conversation activity
    • Training on voice conversations

The opt-out applies to future conversations. It does not prevent other processing described by Microsoft, including general product or system improvements, advertising, safety, security, and compliance. Personalization can remain enabled independently.^1^

    If those controls are absent

Check which account appears under the profile icon:

    • Work or school account (organizational Entra ID): There is no model-training toggle to change. Microsoft states that organizational prompts, responses, and Microsoft Graph data are not used to train foundation large language models.^2^
    • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook: These Microsoft 365 consumer conversations are excluded from model training, so the setting is not displayed.^3^
    • Updated consumer Copilot app or current web experience: The old privacy-control instructions no longer apply. Microsoft’s current support notice redirects users to its newer privacy documentation, but the supplied current documentation does not specify a replacement in-app path for a training toggle.^1^

For client work, the documented organizational option is to sign in using the agency’s eligible work account rather than a personal consumer account. Enterprise Data Protection applies automatically, and the absence of a training toggle does not mean training is enabled: prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models.^4^

Microsoft Q&A cannot add or reposition settings in the product. Feedback requesting a visible status indicator in the updated app should be submitted through the app’s Feedback option. Until Microsoft documents a replacement control for the new consumer experience, avoid entering client-confidential information there if your policies require a user-visible opt-out.
