What are the key differences between Azure Monitor and Azure Application Insights? When is it appropriate to use each service?

Azure Monitor provides a comprehensive monitoring service that offers a unified view of Azure resources, allowing for the collection, analysis, and action on telemetry from various sources. In contrast, Azure Application Insights is a feature of Azure Monitor specifically designed for monitoring the performance and usage of web applications. Azure Monitor should be used for overall infrastructure and resource monitoring, while Application Insights is better suited for gaining deep insights into application behavior and user interactions.

    You can find Azure Monitor Overview page for a high level architecture of Azure Monitor. In short Azure Monitor is a set of services for monitoring Azure and non-Azure resources. Azure Monitor logs is one of those services that allows you to store logs and metrics that you can use monitoring. Application Insights works on top of Azure Monitor logs to monitor applications.
