Hello,

My Azure configuration has not been changed for a long time, but yesterday, I've received an alert message indicating that the last backup was 6 days ago.
The alert is point to the article
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/identity/domain-services/troubleshoot-alerts#aadds501-a-backup-has-not-been-taken-in-a-while
but I can't find any useful information that could explain why this is suddenly happening, but most important, what to do fix it.

Anyone having some ideas/tips to share ?

Thanks,

Paul

    @Paul Rolland

Thank you for posting this in Microsoft Q&A.

As I understand you are getting an alert in Azure AD domain services with an error "AADDS501: The managed domain has not been backed up for a long time".

We have this issue posted by multiple other customers as well. There was an outage in our West Europe region backup tenant due to which this alert was triggered to multiple other clients as well.

Currently this issue is resolved at our backend.

Can you confirm if you are still getting this alert in your tenant?

If you are not getting this alert anymore, please "Accept the answer" if the information helped you. This will help us and others in the community as well.

    Hello @Paul Rolland

Thanks for using Q and A forum.

This is service health alerts related to Microsoft Entra ID

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as a Global Administrator.
    2. Search for and select Microsoft Entra Domain Services.
    3. Select your managed domain, such as aaddscontoso.com.
    4. On the left-hand side of the Domain Services resource window, select Health. The following example screenshot shows a healthy managed domain and the status of the last backup and Microsoft Entra synchronization: Health page overview showing the Microsoft Entra Domain Services status

We are experiencing the same problem since the 15th of october. We are managing several tenants with managed domains and suddenly without any configuration change 70% of our domains are now unhealthy because the backup didnt run for a while resulting in: AADDS501. This has to be an issue on the Microsoft backend.

Hello @Paul Rolland , I think Microsoft has split up the ADDS services in various SKU's. Standard, Enterprise and Premium (not sure what the difference is between the last two). When you are on standard, high availability is not available and you would need to move from standard to enterprise SKU for backing up the managed domain. User's image

This can be set in Microsoft Entra Domain Services page -> SKU menu option.

My last backup was on the 14th of October and received message from MS on the 20th of October. It looks to me another way of earning some extra money for their ADDS service being more resilient. They are also going to do this beginning March 31st 2025 for all Azure App Service Web apps. DR capabilities will not be standard available.
