How do I set default priority account for MS Teams?

How do I set the default/priority account for Microsoft Teams? It always opens to a work account's chat but I would prefer it open to my personal account's chat.

Even when I have an alert in the sys tray about a new message in my personal chat, double-clicking that alert opens to a work chat window with no new messages. I then have to go to the account switcher and select the other account... which then opens in a second window with the correct account (though not the correct chat) and then I have to close the first (non-relevant) window.

    Hi @Howard Schlossberg

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how inconvenient it is when Teams always opens to your work account, especially when you're trying to respond to a personal message.

Based on my research, this behavior is actually a limitation in how Teams currently handles multiple accounts. Even though the notification comes from your personal account, if your work account is the one that’s active at the time, Teams will open that window by default. Unfortunately, it doesn’t automatically switch to the one that triggered the alert, and there’s no built-in option to set a preferred account to open by default.

There are a few suggestions you can try that may help improve your experience:

1.Add your personal account to Teams:

If you haven’t already, you can add your personal account to Teams by selecting your profile picture in the top-right corner and choosing “Add another account.” This makes it easier to switch between accounts when needed.

You can refer to the article for more details: Manage accounts and organizations in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support

2.Set your preferred account before closing:

Before exiting Teams, make sure your personal account is the active one. This can help Teams remember it as the default next time it starts.

    3.Use separate platforms:

Consider using the desktop app for one account and a web browser for the other. This can help keep your work and personal messages more organized.

I know this isn’t the smoothest experience, but I hope these suggestions help make things a little easier to manage.

Thank you for your understanding. If you have further questions, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to help.
