hello everybody

recently I noticed some thing in surface book (1,2,3). I appreciate if you give me your advice and opinion.

you definitely know that surface books have two batteries. I saw that when batteries are discharging, in docked mode, first tablet battery decreases up to 80 and since then it won't reduce and the device only uses keyboard battery.

is it something normal and usual in surface books? if so, how can I change battery usage limitation from 80 to for example 50?

by the way, when keyboard battery charge decreased to 40, both batteries again started to be active.

Allow me to make a brief summary:

In Surface Book, battery management prioritizes the keyboard battery to extend the life of the tablet battery.

As for the way the battery using, a whole new battery usage plan is still to be developed and designed, in addition to the Smart Charging and Battery Limit modes we know about. More personalization is something to look forward to.

    Hi, Mehrshad MKh.

    Thank you for your reply.

I also noticed that you marked my first reply as “unhelpful”.

If you'd like to have the freedom to control how the Surface Book's battery is used according to your preferences, I'm afraid that's not possible, to be honest. The design of the products dictates these characteristics.

Currently, Surface products only have two modes of battery control - Smart Charge and Battery Limit - and no additional battery usage options have been introduced. This is especially true for the Surface Book series, devices with two-part batteries.

It is necessary for me to make you aware of this information, they are all true.

But I think the suggestion to assign more battery usage patterns deserves to be taken up. Perhaps we can submit this usage request via the Feedback Hub in anticipation of Microsoft engineers rolling out methods in future device plans or feature plans.

You can also send a link to the thread with your feedback so we can vote for you.

Thank you for your understanding and support of the Microsoft community.

    Good day.

    Best Regards.

    Hello, Mehrshad MKh.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

In the Surface Book, battery management does prioritize the keyboard battery to extend the life of the tablet battery. This behavior is normal and common.

To change the battery usage limit, for example from 80% to 50%, you can use the Battery Limit option in the UEFI settings of your Surface device. Here are the steps:

    1. Enter UEFI settings:

    • Turn off your Surface device.
    • Press and hold the Volume Up button, then press the Power button.
    • When you see the Surface logo, release the Volume Up button.

    2. Enable Battery Limit:

    • In the UEFI menu, select Startup Configuration.
    • Select Advanced Options.
    • Toggle Enable Battery Limit to On.

When Battery Limit is enabled, the battery will stop charging when 50% of the maximum charging capacity is reached.

For more information about Battery Limit Mode, you can also refer to the following link for more information:

I believe your Surface Book's battery is still working well at the moment. Perhaps you can also try to manually get a driver update for your Surface Book to troubleshoot potential driver issues and maintain device performance:

These are some of the information that I can share with you at this time.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions about the Surface Book product.

I wish you all the best.

    Best Regards.

    Hello Leo
Thank you because of you comprehensive answer.

Is there any way or method to control and manage battery management the way I like? I mean customize its behavior completely based on my preferences?
