Sound not playing from browsers

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could help as I'm stumped and I'm not really sure what's going on.

I have a laptop running on Windows 10 Enterprise, and yesterday realised that sound is no longer playing from browsers (but it's working on system sounds, Outlook, Teams etc) - I've never had an issue before. I thought it was an issue with Chrome, so tried it on Microsoft Edge, but I'm not getting any sound on there either. On both browsers the browser thinks that it's playing (I get an audio symbol), but it's not coming through. However, if I choose the output to be my monitor, then the audio plays. I've checked the settings in sound, and the app volume is set for both my browsers as 100.

Has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone know how to fix it? My laptop is fully up to date, and I've tried searching Google and this forum, but I'm not having any luck.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I have the same issue. But it is just the laptop sound that isn't working on the browsers ONLY. Through a headset the browser sound comes through fine. All other system sounds work as well. I have reinstalled device drivers. No luck.

Had the same problem - go to system -> Sound -> Advanced Sound Option -> Reset to Micros0ft recommended defaults.

Worked instantly as soon as I clicked the button. I suspect there was an update that screwed things up

Same deal, but it's just FireFox. Any other app or browser plays sounds fine. So frustrating.

    Hi Rebecca_307

Welcome to Microsoft Community and hope you are doing well.

Thank you for the description and I found out that your machine is an Enterprise. Due to my job restrictions, I will try my best to help you.

If I have not understood wrong, when you plug in a headset, you can't hear the sound coming from the browser, but local apps like Outlook and Teams are all be fine (make sure your browser sound is not disabled).

If so, when the problem occurs, does the sound icon in the lower right corner of your machine display normally? If not, please check your audio device. And have you replaced a headset device to check again?

If this issue persists then please posting the question to IT Pro. Maybe I was unable to help you directly, but I hope to guide you to the right place: Tech Pro Forum.

Thanks for your patience and understanding, wish a good day!
