Application crashes when open file dialog appears and a folder is selected

I experience this issue with two programs:

  • Mozilla Thunderbird: when i'm trying to attach a file to an email, the dialog windows opens and the moment i select a folder the application crashes
  • ST Cube Programmer from ST Microelectronics: happens the same, when the file dialog appears and i select any folder the application crashes

I'm running Windows 11 on an Acer Aspire 3, it's 3 years old now and never had such issues. Both applications have been installed recently (1-2 weeks ago approx). ST Cube Programmer has been uninstalled and installed again but still experience the issue.

    Hello Leo,

finally i was able to fix the issue. I noticed from event viewer that all the applications crashing had in common an error related to msvcp140.dll, so i tried to download and install the latest Microsoft redistributable for Visual Studio and replace the DLL manually for each application.

    Thank you for support

    Omar

    Hi Leo,

thank you for help. I disabled all of the Microsoft services and restarted but still the issue persists.

    Any other idea?

I will try to post on Learn or get in touch with software support.

    Regards

    Hello, Omar Pellegrinelli.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

I understand that your current system is experiencing crashes when the application is in use, which may be related to your current system.

I would recommend that you try to perform a clean boot first:

    The method is as follows

    1. Tap Windows+R and type msconfig
    2. Open System Configuration and select General tab - Selective Startup.
    3. Remove the checkbox of Load startup items.
    4. Go to the Services tab - click Hide all Microsoft services in the lower left corner, and then click Disable all.
    5. Click OK and restart your computer. (Be sure to select Hide all Microsoft services first and then click Disable all, otherwise it may cause unforeseen problems such as not being able to access the system.)

See if the problem still recurs.

Disclaimer: Clean boot is a way to start Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine if background programs are interfering with your games or programs and help you figure out the cause of the problem. It will help you get back on track.

Additionally, since this situation may also involve your third-party applications, as Windows support, I unfortunately don't know much about them. I would also recommend contacting software support if you would like more tailored advice.

Or you can post your question on the Microsoft Learn **** board and maybe one of the amazing moderators will have some cool ideas for you.

Here are some of the suggestions I can make for you right now.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

    Best Regards.

    Thank you for your reply.

You can continue to try the following:

    1. Search for CMD, find the command prompt, run in administrator mode.
    2. Enter the following commands one by one, make sure to execute the next command after the previous one is completed.

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    SFC /Scannow

    1. After the scanning is completed, you can check the scanning information to see if the problem has been detected and fixed.

These are some of the ways I can think of for the time being.

    Best Regards.
