    Hello BARRY PETERS ****,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your post. I understand that you are having issue with lost sound on laptop. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

For me to provide the most accurate solutions, could you please answer some clarifying questions:

    1. Is the sound missing everywhere or just in specific apps? For example, does it work in YouTube or system sounds, but not in Microsoft Teams or Outlook?
    2. Are you using external speakers, headphones, or just the built-in laptop speakers?
    3. Do you see any error messages or warnings in the sound settings or Device Manager?
    4. Did your laptop install any updates recently (Windows or drivers)? Sometimes updates can affect audio drivers.
    5. What is the model of your laptop?

In the meantime, you can also try these steps to fix the issue:

    1. Check and Set the Correct Output Device

Sometimes Windows switches the audio output device.

    • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → Sound settings.
    • Under Output, make sure the correct device (e.g., "Speakers (Realtek)", "Headphones", etc.) is selected.
    • Test sound by clicking "Test" next to the device.

    2. Restart Audio Services

Windows audio services may have stopped.

    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Find these services:
      • Windows Audio
        • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
        • Right-click each → Restart.

    3. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

Drivers may have become corrupted or outdated.

    • Press Windows + XDevice Manager.

    • Right-click your audio device → Update driver.
      • Or choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop to reinstall it automatically.

Let Windows detect and fix the issue.

    • Go to SettingsSystemSound.
    • Scroll down and click Troubleshoot under Advanced.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions.

    Hi Barry Peters

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum and for sharing the detail. I understand how unexpected it can be when your laptop’s sound stops working, especially when everything was fine just the day before. I’m here to help you get this resolved as quickly as possible.

To better understand the issue and provide the most accurate support, could you please help me with a few details?

    1. Which version of Windows is installed on your laptop?  (You can check this by going to Settings > System > About
    2. Have there been any recent updates or changes to your system before the issue started?  (Such as Windows updates, new software installations, or hardware changes)
    3. Is the sound missing in all apps or just specific ones?  (For example: no sound in YouTube, Teams, or system notifications)
    4. Have you already tried any steps to fix it?  (Such as restarting the device, checking the volume, or plugging in headphones)

In the meantime, here are a few basic steps you can try:

    1. Check Output Device
      • Go to Settings > System > Sound
      • Under Output, make sure the correct device is selected (e.g., Speakers or Headphones).
    2. Run the Audio Troubleshooter
      • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
      • Find Audio and click Run.
    3. Update Audio Drivers
      • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers
      • Right-click your audio device and choose Update driver.  4
    4. Check the Volume
      • Click the speaker icon in the taskbar and make sure the volume is turned up.
      • If you're using external speakers or headphones, check their volume and connections too.
    5. Restart Your Device
      • A simple restart can often resolve temporary glitches.

Please let me know the results after trying these steps, and feel free to share the answers to the questions above. I’ll be ready to guide you further based on what we find.

Thank you again for your patience and for choosing Microsoft Q&A forum. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can assist you with. I’m here to support you every step of the way. Looking forward to your reply.
