Your phone number is already associated with an existing developer account"

Hello all,

I am attempting to join the Microsoft 365 Developer Program and am receiving a "Your phone number is already associated with an existing developer account" error message.

I don't recall signing up for this program in the past, and I don't see that any of the accounts that I know of have joined this program (i.e., every account I have is making me go through the enrollment and I get the same error message on each of them).

I've tried contacting Microsoft support directly to see if they can pinpoint what account this number is associated with, but no luck there. If anyone else has seen this issue and was able to get it resolved, I would appreciate some advice. Trying to use a Google Voice number (or equivalent as far as I know) is unsupported, otherwise I would just do that.

Dear @Cameron Bolton

Thank you so much for contacting Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Based on your description, I would like to provide more information about developer account in order to help you in this situation. Microsoft enforces a strict rule: a phone number can only be linked to one Microsoft 365 Developer Program account. Even if the associated account is deleted, the phone number remains locked for up to 60 days before it can be reused.

Reference: Microsoft 365 Developer Program FAQ | Microsoft Learn

Therefore, I have several suggestions that you may try them to see if they can work:

1.Try to identify to see if you have a linked account:

If you don’t recall signing up, you can try logging in using your phone number at this link: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=529489 . This may help identify the account that has the number linked.

2.Contact Microsoft Developer Support:

If the above step doesn’t help, you should post your issue on the official Microsoft Developer Community: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/community . This is often more effective than general support channels.

Kindly notes:

  • If the phone number was used at a previous company, you may need to contact the admin of that tenant to remove it from the authentication methods.
  • If you no longer have access to that company or account, unfortunately, Microsoft does not currently offer a direct way to unlink the number without cooperation from the original account holder.
  • Wait 60 Days after deleting the old profile: if you previously had a developer profile (even unknowingly), and it was deleted, you must wait 60 days before the phone number becomes eligible for reuse.

You can consult in this case, and it had a partially similar scenario as your situation: How do I remove my mobile number from a developer account after I've - Microsoft Community

And please kindly check the FAQ for Microsoft 365 Developer Program in the link above.

I hope this information can help you to understand it and can resolve this issue soon.

Wish you a pleasant day!

    Hi @Cameron Bolton

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Please understand that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to cover your organization domain name in the description. Please notice to hide these personal or organization information next time you post error or some information to protect personal data.

According to this issue, please try to raise the ticket to Microsoft personal account Support to see if you could ask them about this. If the number is already bonded to an existing developer account but you could not remember, then the chance to go to that account and remove the phone number is significantly minimal.

As we are forum moderators - we do not have access to internal data resource to help you with this. You might need to use another phone number to apply for registration.
