Finding Older Teams Chats

Anonymous

When using Teams, I scroll down to the bottom of my conversations/chats. They stop at a certain date and don't show anything older. I can even search using the name assigned to the chat or keywords I know were used in that chat. Yet they still won't show up.

If I ping a coworker who was in that chat, they can find it and send a new message. Then the conversation will pop up at the top of the list with the entire old conversation intact. What is happening?!?

Jayzar - I really appreciate your help. But it seems that you keep honing into certain words and ignore most of the other details I am providing.

Let me be very clear again. The chats are 100% retained in the system. They still exist in their entirety and can be found/accessed by my coworkers. They can write "hey" in that conversation and it pops back up again in my list of available chats. It shows up as if it was never missing and has every message, every pic, every file, etc.

But I cannot personally scroll down past a certain date on my list of Chats. And when I try to use the global search bar to find these same chats that my coworkers have no issue locating.... nothing for me. The app can't find them and provides no helpful hints about settings I could change. Very frustrating.

So again I ask: how can we fix this so that all of my chats are accessible to me in the app whenever I want them?

Jayzar - Thanks for the info but this does not resolve my issue. As I stated in the original question, the global search bar is not finding these conversations. Yet somehow my coworkers can find these older chats when I cannot. This is what I am trying to fix.

Using the web version is a workaround rather than a solution. We need to actually resolve the issue in the app. Any other thoughts?

    Hello Steele.Joshua,

You can find old chats in Teams by using the search box at the top of the screen which acts as the global search bar for the app. You can type a keyword, name, or file to find a previous message or conversation. If the chat is hidden, you can select the person's name and choose to show the chat history. Alternatively, you can use a command to get a report of the chat history for a group mailbox.

If this does not work. You can log in using the web version of Teams at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams...

    Hi Steele.Joshua,

Check if your organization has set the retention policy for Teams chat, which may limit how long messages show in a chat or channel.

To check if your organization has set the retention policy for Teams chat, you can ask your IT administrator or check it yourself if you have the appropriate permissions.

You can also share this link to them as their guide.

    Kind regards,

    Jayzar

    Hello Steele.Joshua,

I know there is no apologies can make up for it and thank you sharing more information. Your MS Teams app might be corrupted, there was an issue with the cache or this is related to your profile only.

There are a few things you can try:

One workaround is to do the search, see who you were chatting with in the search result, pop out the chat with that person, then search again. Now "go to message" will scroll in that pop-out window. Another workaround is to "pin" the search result, then go back to the chat thread and click on the pinned message. You will scroll to the results.

If these workarounds don't work for you, you can try using **CTRL+F** and typing Sent:20.08 (or Sent:08/20 if you're located in the US) to jump to a specific date. However, this may only list the messages at the side of the screen and not take you to that date in the main body of the Teams chat.

In the event that still these does not work on your end, there might be an issue with the app you are using (it might be corrupted) or with your profile since your coworker can see the old messages.

These are the steps you can do:

    1. Uninstall and Reinstall MS Teams.
    2. Cleat Teams Cache, guide in here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteam...
    3. Report this to your IT or Admin so that they can raise ticket to the dedicated support Team and further investigate and get this fix once and for all.

Again, thank for your time and patience.

    Kind regards,

    Jayzar
