Cannot Delete Team Chats.

Hey Team, we are unable to delete one on one Team Chats. Nothing has changed, the option just no longer shows in teams. It seems to have started in the past couple of weeks.

Global Policy for Messaging Policies is set to Defaults. I also created another policy and added a few ppl from my team just to test. But sadly, same issue?

I'm not aware of any changes that would effect this.

Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Corey Colwell

    Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are glad to assist!

The recent update to Microsoft Teams on November 20, 2024, has indeed changed how users manage their chat conversations, particularly concerning the ability to delete chats on the desktop version. Here’s a detailed overview of the current scenario:

As of the latest update, the option to delete entire chats appears to be replaced primarily by the "Hide" function on the desktop app. Here are the specifics:

In contrast, the mobile version of Teams continues to allow users to delete entire conversations outright. When a user deletes a chat on their mobile device, it synchronizes with the desktop app, effectively removing the chat from the chat list entirely. Users can easily delete a conversation by selecting the chat and choosing the delete option.

Microsoft has not explicitly stated that they are completely doing away with the delete function; however, the transition towards hiding chats instead of deleting them may reflect a change in how they wish users to manage chat history. This aligns with a broader trend in many applications where hidden data is retained for potential future reference, instead of being permanently deleted.

The difference in functionality between mobile and desktop versions could be due to:

    • User Experience Design: Microsoft may choose to provide a more controlled environment on desktops, where accidental deletions can be more impactful, compared to mobile devices where quick, ephemeral interactions are common.
    • Data Retention Policies: The preference for hiding chats on desktops might also align with organizational policies aimed at retaining information for compliance or reference purposes.
    • Ongoing Development: This change may reflect initial stages of a rollout, and user feedback could influence whether Microsoft decides to revert or adjust the functionality in future updates.

In summary, while you can currently only hide chats on the desktop version of Teams, you can still delete entire conversations on the mobile app, which will sync with the desktop version. This dichotomy may stem from design choices or retention strategies by Microsoft. If users are keen on having a delete option restored, it may be beneficial to provide feedback to Microsoft regarding this feature.

We do understand your concern about this feature that how it helps you to improve your efficiency in such daily busy work schedule but as it is related with Teams product design, so it is suggested to submit your valuable feedback directly to Microsoft product development team by either go to Help from your dedicated App > submit Feedback or by posting on Ideas · Community (microsoft.com) . This is require because as we are from community team, we can only assist you to troubleshoot the query/share work around (if we have for any by design query) and providing you required information for feature’s availability status.

This community team and Microsoft product development team are separate. So for feature’s suggestion or by design query, user need to submit feedback from their side to Microsoft product team. Once user send feedback via above mentioned way, it’s sent to Microsoft directly and it's routed to the relevant product teams who can review it.

Thanks for your precious time and your understanding would be highly appreciated. Have a nice day!

I really don't understand update should be like update not like degrade. Removing the delete options is a very bad idea. Give a real update bring back delete options.

This issue is causing a lot of trouble with Omnichannel channels and Copilot bots.

Since we can’t delete chats, conversations never really end.

When we start a new conversation in a different Omnichannel channel, it often gets redirected to an old channel that was already deleted from the Omnichannel Admin Center but still can’t be fully removed.

Also, removing the delete option from the desktop version while keeping it on mobile doesn’t make sense and creates a messy, inconsistent experience. Please bring back the delete option to the desktop version—it’s the best and works way better for most users.

Why would they remove the Delete feature and replace it with "Hide".

This is a ridiculous update. They should return the DELETE option.

Thanks for that Allen. I appreciate your time.

Seems like an odd thing to take away from Teams. But, as the saying goes, "Never let common sense get in the way of a decision".. lol

    Cheers,
