Additional chat-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for business
Dear Corey Colwell
Good day!
Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are glad to assist!
The recent update to Microsoft Teams on November 20, 2024, has indeed changed how users manage their chat conversations, particularly concerning the ability to delete chats on the desktop version. Here’s a detailed overview of the current scenario:
As of the latest update, the option to delete entire chats appears to be replaced primarily by the "Hide" function on the desktop app. Here are the specifics:
- Hiding Chats: Users can hide one-on-one and group chats, which removes them from the current visibility but does not delete the chat from the system. This means that while you can no longer see the chat in your list, it remains archived and can be unhidden later.
- Deleting Messages: You can still delete individual messages within a chat thread, but deleting the entire chat is not supported in the desktop app post-update Hide a chat or leave a chat thread in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support, Hide chats and delete messages - Microsoft Support
In contrast, the mobile version of Teams continues to allow users to delete entire conversations outright. When a user deletes a chat on their mobile device, it synchronizes with the desktop app, effectively removing the chat from the chat list entirely. Users can easily delete a conversation by selecting the chat and choosing the delete option.
Microsoft has not explicitly stated that they are completely doing away with the delete function; however, the transition towards hiding chats instead of deleting them may reflect a change in how they wish users to manage chat history. This aligns with a broader trend in many applications where hidden data is retained for potential future reference, instead of being permanently deleted.
The difference in functionality between mobile and desktop versions could be due to:
- User Experience Design: Microsoft may choose to provide a more controlled environment on desktops, where accidental deletions can be more impactful, compared to mobile devices where quick, ephemeral interactions are common.
- Data Retention Policies: The preference for hiding chats on desktops might also align with organizational policies aimed at retaining information for compliance or reference purposes.
- Ongoing Development: This change may reflect initial stages of a rollout, and user feedback could influence whether Microsoft decides to revert or adjust the functionality in future updates.
In summary, while you can currently only hide chats on the desktop version of Teams, you can still delete entire conversations on the mobile app, which will sync with the desktop version. This dichotomy may stem from design choices or retention strategies by Microsoft. If users are keen on having a delete option restored, it may be beneficial to provide feedback to Microsoft regarding this feature.
